ALLDAY PROJECT's Tarzzan Tried to Crowd Surf But It Didn't Go to Plan
ALLDAY PROJECT's Tarzzan attempted to take his performance at Konkuk University's festival directly into the crowd on October 1. The attempt, however, did not quite go according to plan.
During the group's performance, Tarzzan attempted to crowd surf, launching himself toward the students gathered in front of the stage. Rather than being carried across the audience, he quickly disappeared into the crowd as the attempt came to an abrupt end.
The moment was brief, but clips quickly attracted attention online, particularly because of the confidence with which Tarzzan committed to the jump compared with how quickly the crowd surf ended.
While the resulting clip makes for an amusing moment, crowd surfing requires considerably more coordination than it can appear to.
The performer needs to enter an area with enough people to distribute their weight, while those directly underneath need enough warning to understand what is happening and prepare to support them. A sudden jump can therefore go wrong even when the audience itself is enthusiastic.
The setting may have also played a role as unlike a solo concert, where most attendees have deliberately purchased tickets to see one artist, university festivals bring together students with varying levels of interest in each performer.
Those standing closest to Tarzzan were not necessarily ALLDAY PROJECT fans or familiar with the type of audience participation he had in mind. As well as the fact that many attendees near the front of the stage were all already quite preoccupied holding their phones up in their hands making it difficult to help carry the performer in the intended way.
Crowd surfing is also particularly associated with punk, rock, metal and certain Western festival environments, where attendees may already expect moshing, crowd surfing and performers entering the audience.
Korean university festivals can be equally energetic, with crowds singing, chanting and jumping throughout performances, but crowd surfing is not necessarily as established a part of that environment.
That difference does not mean the audience was unwilling to participate. They simply may not have anticipated that they would suddenly be responsible for carrying one of the performers.
Tarzzan also appeared to commit quickly to the attempt, leaving little time for those immediately around him to prepare. When someone unexpectedly moves toward a crowd, even excited fans may instinctively step backward rather than reach forward.
The failed attempt was particularly noticeable because crowd surfing fits naturally with Tarzzan's established performance style.
Since ALLDAY PROJECT's debut, the rapper has leaned into a loose, high-energy stage presence influenced by hip-hop culture. Jumping directly into an audience fits that image, removing the boundary between performer and crowd and creating the kind of chaotic moment that can become a highlight of a live set.
This time, however, the execution did not quite match the intention.
Tarzzan quickly recovered and continued the performance, leaving the short-lived crowd surf as one of the more memorable moments from ALLDAY PROJECT's appearance at the festival.
Sometimes a crowd surf lasts several minutes. Sometimes it lasts several seconds and it seems that in this case Tarzzan got the latter.
