Real name: Lee Ye Jin

"Heaven," the debut single Ailee released in early 2012, announced an unusual arrival in Korean pop: a singer whose power-vocal instincts owed more to American R&B and gospel than to the polished idol sound dominating the charts at the time. Born Lee Ye Jin in Denver, Colorado, the American-raised artist brought a full-throated, technically ambitious voice to a market that rewarded it, and the song's success established her as one of the more distinctive solo vocalists to emerge from that generation of K-pop debuts.

Debut and early career

Ailee's introduction to the Korean music industry came with the 2012 extended play Invitation, from which "Heaven" drew widespread attention. The single became a representative work, circulated widely enough to define how the public understood what she did and what set her apart from contemporaries. Also that year, she contributed to Hitman Project #1: A Tribute to the Hitman, David Foster, a project that placed her voice in a more overtly Western adult-contemporary frame and underlined the cross-cultural range she was working within.

Music and discography

The years between 2013 and 2016 produced a steady sequence of releases that developed her sonic range without abandoning the vocal-forward identity of her debut. The 2013 extended play A's Doll House arrived alongside the single "Higher," which became another of her representative works and demonstrated a willingness to push into larger, more theatrical arrangements. The 2014 EP Magazine expanded that direction, and the composition "Don't Touch Me" from the same year further consolidated her reputation as a singer willing to anchor high-energy, belt-driven material.

Her first full-length album, Vivid, followed in 2015 — a logical broadening of a catalog that had, to that point, moved largely through EPs and singles. The 2016 EP A New Empire continued the run.

The single that reached the widest audience came in 2017: "I Will Go to You Like the First Snow", recorded for the soundtrack of the television drama *Goblin*. The song, in keeping with the drama's outsized cultural footprint, became one of the most-streamed Korean OST tracks of its period and remains among her most recognized works. It is listed among her representative works alongside "Heaven," "Higher," and the David Foster tribute project — a grouping that maps the arc from debut ambition to mainstream reach.

After a multi-year gap, Ailee returned to recorded output with the 2021 extended play Lovin', marking her continued presence in the industry nearly a decade after her initial breakthrough.

Activities

Beyond recorded music, Ailee has remained active in performance and production contexts. In 2026, she launched Ailee Band, a self-produced YouTube survival series aimed at forming a band and providing debut opportunities for musicians who had not had a platform. The project involved a twelve-hour judging process and drew on her experience as an established industry figure to mentor emerging artists.

She has also appeared on the Korean reality program Marriage Diary alongside her husband, Choi Si-hoon, documenting aspects of their personal life including their ongoing IVF treatment. Coverage from early 2026 notes that she has been shifting her focus back to music following marriage, with new musical endeavors described as underway.
