Alvin (앨빈)

When the film *Dora* received an official invitation to the Directors' Fortnight section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival in April 2026, it marked a significant crossing point for Kim Do-yeon — known professionally as Alvin — from the world of K-pop into serious international cinema. A former member of the project group I.O.I and the short-lived act 7.9.4.2, Kim had spent years building a solo career as a singer and actress in South Korea before the Cannes selection signalled the beginning of a broader global profile.

From Idol to Screen

Kim Do-yeon debuted within the structured pathway of the Korean idol system, gaining early public recognition as a member of I.O.I, the project group assembled through the *Produce 101* competition series. After I.O.I's dissolution, she continued activity as part of 7.9.4.2 before pursuing solo work as a singer and, increasingly, as an actress. Her transition to film earned formal recognition when she received the Blue Dragon Award for Best New Actress, a credential that accompanied her casting in *Dora* and lent weight to the Cannes invitation that followed.

A Cannes Debut

Director Jung Ju-ri's *Dora* was produced with investment from Episode Company, the same entity behind Yeon Sang-ho's *Colony* — a Korean zombie genre film also selected for the 79th Cannes International Film Festival. The parallel selections were noted in Korean media as part of a deliberate diversification strategy by the production company. For Kim Do-yeon, the invitation represented her first attendance at Cannes, and coverage of her departure to France in May 2026 drew considerable attention to her airport appearance, with outlets describing her all-black styling as earning her the informal designation "New Goddess of Cannes." Director Jung Ju-ri's record of having all her films invited to Cannes added further context to the significance of the selection.

A Reunion Decade On

In May 2026, Kim Do-yeon reunited with fellow I.O.I member Kim Se-jeong for an appearance on Chef Park Eun-young's YouTube channel, the two reconnecting roughly a decade after the group's initial run. The meeting was noted as part of a broader I.O.I tenth-anniversary reunion, with fellow member Chungha credited as the driving force behind gathering the group. The appearance underscored the enduring public interest in the original I.O.I lineup and Kim Do-yeon's continued presence within that shared history.
