Changmin (창민)

The name most international listeners associate with Changmin belongs to TVXQ, the SM Entertainment duo whose longevity across two decades of Korean pop has made it one of the genre's most durable acts. Born Lee Chang Min on May 1, 1986, he first came to public attention after winning the grand prize at the SM Youth Best Contest, a result that led directly to his casting while still in middle school and, ultimately, to his debut with TVXQ in 2003.

Debut & Formation

Changmin's path into the industry followed the competitive trainee pipeline that SM Entertainment formalized in the early 2000s. His contest victory gave him entry into that system at an unusually young age, and he debuted with TVXQ at a point when the group was being positioned as a cornerstone of the label's ambitions across Korea and Japan. He has served as the group's main vocalist, a role that placed him at the center of TVXQ's musical identity through its various lineup changes and across genres ranging from dramatic ballads to high-energy dance pop.

Music & Discography

Beyond TVXQ, Changmin has operated within two additional musical contexts. He is a member of 2AM, the ballad-oriented group under which he is credited as both main vocalist and rapper, a combination that reflects a range not always foregrounded in his TVXQ work. He is also a member of Homme, a duo project in which he takes on the lead vocalist role — a smaller, more intimate format that allowed for a different register of performance than either of his other groups typically demanded.

Activities

Changmin completed his mandatory military service as a public relations officer for the police, fulfilling his active duty obligation through August 2017. Since returning, he has maintained a presence both as a performer and, more recently, as someone working directly with the next generation of SM talent. Recent appearances include his YouTube channel Saego_F5, where a 2026 episode featured solo artist Seunghan — a current SM act — cooking Jeju-style street food alongside Changmin while discussing trainee life and Seunghan's activity system. The format, candid and conversational, offered a window into continuity across SM generations and suggested an ease with longer-form content creation alongside his performance work. He has also continued to work with trainees in a mentoring capacity, and a 2026 profile noted him taking on the role of a physical education teacher in a project involving trainees — an extension of the connection to younger artists that the YouTube appearance also reflected. Changmin has been married to a non-celebrity partner; 2026 marked their seventh year of marriage.
