When Wanna One disbanded at the close of 2018 after a fixed one-year run, most of its eleven members moved swiftly into solo careers or new groups. Lai Guan Lin, the Taiwanese-born maknae who had entered the Korean industry as a teenager through the survival competition *Produce 101 Season 2*, eventually took a different route — stepping away from entertainment altogether. His reappearance in 2026 on the Mnet reunion reality program *Wanna One Go: Back to Base*, with a shaved head and a noticeably quieter presence, drew as much attention as any of his former groupmates still active in the industry.

Debut & Formation

Born in Taiwan on September 23, 2001, Lai Guan Lin was among the younger trainees to enter *Produce 101 Season 2* in 2017, finishing high enough in the public vote to secure a spot in the eleven-member project group Wanna One. At 15 going on 16 at the time of his debut, he served as the group's maknae — its youngest member — as well as a lead rapper. Standing at 183 cm, he also carried the visual designation within the lineup, a role that translated quickly into modeling and endorsement activity during the group's active period.

Before Wanna One concluded its contracted run, Kuanlin had already formed the duo Wooseok X Kuanlin alongside Pentagon member Wooseok, in which he again held the positions of lead rapper, visual, and maknae. Wanna One operated on a fixed timeline by design — a structure unusual enough in K-pop that its disbandment at the end of 2018 was anticipated rather than abrupt. For Kuanlin, the years that followed saw a gradual reduction in visible activity rather than a clean transition to a solo career. After the Wooseok X Kuanlin project, his presence in the Korean entertainment space diminished, and by the mid-2020s, former groupmate Lee Daehwi confirmed on the talk program *Radio Star* that Kuanlin had left the industry to pursue a different path, relocating overseas.

The 2026 Mnet production *Wanna One Go: Back to Base* brought him back into frame — literally, as he appeared in the show's main poster alongside members including Kang Daniel, who participated while on mandatory military service. Kuanlin's appearance on camera, featuring his buzzed hairstyle and what coverage described as a warmer, more relaxed demeanor, registered as a genuine surprise for the show's audience. A kaoliang liquor gift he sent to the other members — a Taiwanese spirit of considerable strength — prompted a comedic group reaction that the program's coverage highlighted as an illustration of the group's durable chemistry across seven years of separation.

Kuanlin's trajectory is a relatively uncommon one in K-pop: a high-profile debut through one of the genre's most-watched survival formats, a brief but visible post-debut period, and then a deliberate exit from the industry at an age when most peers are still building their careers. His return for *Wanna One Go: Back to Base* did not signal a professional comeback so much as a personal one — a willingness to close a chapter properly, in public, with the group that first established his name.
