Max

As the main vocalist and youngest member of TVXQ!, Shim Changmin — known by his stage name Max — has spent more than two decades as one of South Korean pop's most recognizable voices. Discovered while still in middle school and debuted by SM Entertainment in 2003, he has built a career that extends from the group's dominance across East Asia to a solo discography and a growing presence as a media personality.

Debut and early career

Changmin entered the SM Entertainment system after winning the grand prize at the SM Youth Best Contest, a competition the label has historically used to identify trainee talent. He debuted as part of TVXQ — originally a five-member act — and quickly became distinguished as the group's main vocalist, a role that placed him at the center of its most demanding vocal arrangements. As the maknae, or youngest member, he grew up largely in public view, his development as a performer unfolding across TVXQ's expansive run of releases and touring activity throughout the 2000s.

Solo work

Outside of TVXQ, Changmin has maintained a solo output under the Max name. His debut solo album Close To You was released in 2015, followed by two extended plays: Chocolate in 2020 and Human in 2021. The EPs mark a more deliberate solo identity, distinct from his work within the duo, though the material has not broken significantly from the K-pop framework he has operated in throughout his career.

Military service and activities

Changmin completed his mandatory military service as a police public relations officer, finishing in August 2017. The assignment, a form of alternative service available to those who qualify, kept him in a public-facing role even during the period he was away from active performing. Since returning, he has continued work as a singer, actor, and model, and has expanded into content creation — his YouTube channel has served as a platform for candid interactions with both peers and juniors within the SM Entertainment roster.

Personal life

In his seventh year of marriage as of early 2026, Changmin has been notably open about domestic life for an artist of his profile, occasionally referencing it in public appearances. He is married to a non-celebrity, a detail that has attracted periodic attention given the level of scrutiny K-pop figures typically face around personal relationships.
