Max Changmin

Shim Chang-min arrived at one of K-pop's most enduring groups without auditioning in the conventional sense — he was cast while still in middle school, then won the grand prize at SM Entertainment's SM Youth Best Contest before debuting as the youngest member of TVXQ! (동방신기) in 2003. For more than two decades, the group he joined as a teenager has remained one of the most recognizable acts to emerge from South Korea, and Changmin has grown with it from a trainee prodigy into one of its two active pillars.

Debut and early career

TVXQ launched in late 2003 under SM Entertainment and built a fanbase that eventually extended well beyond South Korea into Japan and across East Asia. Changmin, the group's youngest member, became known for his upper-register vocal range — a high tenor capable of the kind of sustained, dramatic notes that defined the group's signature R&B-inflected ballads and pop productions during the mid-2000s.

Activities

Beyond his work with TVXQ, Changmin has pursued acting alongside his music career. He also completed mandatory military service, fulfilling his active-duty obligation as a police public relations officer, a role he finished in August 2017 — a path that brought him back to the group's activities in the years that followed.

More recently, Changmin has extended his presence through a YouTube channel, Saego_F5-Deokbapzip, where he has hosted younger SM artists. A 2026 episode brought together Changmin and solo artist Seunghan, with the two preparing Jeju-style street food and trading conversation about shared SM trainee memories — a format that positioned Changmin as a senior figure connecting generations of SM talent.

Personal

In early 2026, Changmin confirmed that he and his non-celebrity spouse had reached their seventh year of marriage — news he shared publicly while also taking on a new role working with trainees, presenting a markedly different side of his public persona from the performer audiences had known since his teenage debut.
