Shin Hye-Sung
Real name: Jung Pil-kyo
Among the longest-running acts in K-pop, Shinhwa has endured well past the point where most idol groups dissolve — and Shin Hye-sung has been one of its vocalists throughout that span. Born Jung Pil-kyo in November 1979, he debuted alongside the group under SM Entertainment in the late 1990s and has remained a member through the label transitions that followed, including Good Entertainment and the group's own Shinhwa Company. That continuity, once a point of industry note, has been complicated in recent years by a series of drunk driving incidents that placed him on an extended hiatus and reshaped his public standing.
Career with Shinhwa
Shinhwa debuted in 1998 and, unusually for a first-generation idol group, retained its full lineup across decades and multiple label changes. Shin Hye-sung occupied a lead vocalist role within the group and pursued parallel activities as a solo singer and actor. The group's longevity made it a reference point in Korean pop for membership stability, and Shin Hye-sung's continued presence was part of that narrative.
Controversies and Hiatus
The more recent chapter of his career has been defined by legal and reputational difficulty. Shin Hye-sung has been booked for drunk driving on two separate occasions. In 2022, he received a suspended prison sentence specifically for refusing a breathalyzer test — a charge treated more seriously under South Korean road traffic law than the driving offense alone. He has been on hiatus from public activity since that year.
His absence became visible beyond the legal record in early 2026, when fellow Shinhwa member Lee Min-woo held his wedding. While the other members attended, Shin Hye-sung did not. The absence prompted speculation about discord within the group, which member Kim Dong-wan addressed directly on social media, framing the absence as a personal choice to remain out of the public eye rather than evidence of a rupture — asking, in his own words, why people kept attaching meaning to someone wanting to live quietly.
Property Sale
During his hiatus, Shin Hye-sung listed and ultimately sold real estate holdings in Seoul's Gangnam district. A building in Nonhyeon-dong, purchased for approximately 4.9 billion won in 2022, was put on the market in April 2026 at between 5.4 and 5.7 billion won. A separate Gangnam building, which had cost 900 million won to construct, sold for 5.55 billion won. While the nominal figures suggest a market gain, analysts noted that after construction costs and taxes the Gangnam transaction represented a real-terms loss. The sales occurred against the backdrop of his ongoing hiatus and drew coverage primarily because of that context rather than as straightforward property news.
