Suwon (수원)

Jang Su-won first came to public attention as the youngest member — and sub-vocalist — of Sechs Kies, the second-generation idol group that debuted in 1997 and became one of the defining acts of late-1990s Korean pop. Known by his stage name Suwon, he has sustained a presence across music, acting, and broadcasting across nearly three decades, a span that includes a mid-career group reunion and a side project that kept him active through the years in between.

Debut and early career

Sechs Kies formed in 1997 and placed Jang Su-won in the maknae position — the youngest member of the group — alongside sub-vocalist duties. The group's run through the late 1990s established them as a prominent presence in what is now considered the first generation of the modern idol era in South Korea. The group disbanded in 2000, leaving Jang to chart an independent path.

Activities beyond the group

In 2002, Jang Su-won began a new musical chapter by forming J-Walk alongside fellow entertainer Kim Jae-duck. The duo has remained active in that configuration, offering a quieter, more adult-contemporary register than the choreography-driven idol format of Sechs Kies.

His pivot to acting came in 2013, when he appeared in the idol special edition of the long-running television program *Love and War*. The performance drew an unexpected kind of attention: viewers and commentators began referring to him as the "founder of robot acting," a label that acknowledged a notably stiff on-screen delivery and, in doing so, gave him a distinct comedic identity within Korean entertainment circles. The nickname stuck, and it became part of how he is recognized as a personality rather than merely a former idol.

Sechs Kies reunited in 2016, and Jang Su-won has been an active participant in the group's activities since that point, continuing alongside the group's original membership.
