Xiumin (시우민)

Kim Min-seok built his public profile as the oldest member of SM Entertainment's flagship group EXO, debuting in 2012 alongside one of the most anticipated K-pop launches of that era. Known professionally as Xiumin, he has sustained that presence across EXO's main lineup, the China-facing subunit EXO-M, and the trio EXO-CBX, where he serves as leader, main rapper, main dancer, and lead vocalist — a breadth of roles that distinguishes him even within a group defined by individual versatility.

Debut & Formation

Xiumin entered the industry through SM Entertainment's training pipeline, eventually debuting as part of EXO when the group was introduced in two parallel subunits targeting Korean and Chinese markets simultaneously. His placement in EXO-M gave him early exposure to Mandarin-language releases, while his concurrent membership in the full EXO roster kept him central to the group's Korean activities. The dual-unit structure was unusual for its time and positioned Xiumin across a wider range of content from the outset of his career.

His role expanded further with EXO-CBX, a subunit formed from EXO members Xiumin, Baekhyun, and Chen. Within that configuration he holds the leader position alongside credits as main rapper, main dancer, and lead vocalist — a set of responsibilities that placed him at the center of the subunit's creative and performative output.

Music & Discography

Xiumin's solo discography is measured but deliberate. The 2017 single "Young & Free", a collaboration with fellow SM artist Zhang Yixing (Lay), stands as his most recognized individual work from that period and is listed among his representative releases. The track operated within a contemporary R&B register that runs through his broader musical identity alongside K-pop production conventions.

His first solo extended play, Brand New, arrived in 2022 following his discharge from mandatory military service. The record marked a formal step into solo artistry after years defined primarily by group activity, and it was released through INB100 Entertainment, reflecting a label arrangement that operated alongside his ongoing ties to SM Entertainment and, for certain releases, Avex Trax in Japan.

Activities

Beyond music, Xiumin has worked in acting and modeling, occupations that have kept him active across multiple entertainment verticals throughout his career. His profile as EXO's eldest member also carried a representational weight within the group's public identity, a dynamic that became more pronounced as members navigated military service at different points across the late 2010s and early 2020s. Xiumin was among the earlier members to complete his service, which allowed the 2022 solo release to function as a returning statement.

Legacy

Within EXO's long-running story, Xiumin occupies a specific position as a founding member who has remained active across the group's main unit, its Chinese subunit, and a domestic subgroup, accumulating roles and credits across more than a decade of activity. His career arc — group vocalist to subunit leader to solo artist — reflects a trajectory common to long-tenured K-pop performers, and his 2022 extended play indicated continued investment in an independent lane beyond the ensemble context that first defined him.
