When "Dynamite" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 2020, it marked the first time a South Korean act had topped that chart — a milestone that reframed the conversation about what K-pop could accomplish in the Western market. The group behind it, BTS (방탄소년단, Bangtan Boys), had spent seven years building toward that moment from a debut that drew little industry attention, signed to a small Seoul agency and competing against acts from the country's most established entertainment conglomerates. By 2026, with a fifth studio album, a sold-out world tour, and a triple win at the American Music Awards, the seven-member group under Big Hit Music had become the most commercially visible act in K-pop's global expansion.

Debut and early years

BTS debuted on June 13, 2013, with the single album *2 Cool 4 Skool*, followed later that year by the extended play *O!RUL8,2?*. The group's early output — including *Skool Luv Affair* (2014) and the single "Danger" — drew from hip-hop and reflected an anti-establishment energy that set them apart from the polished idol template dominant at the time. The 2014 full-length *Dark & Wild* extended that direction, though the group's audience remained primarily domestic.

The turning point came in 2015. The extended play *The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Pt. 1* and the singles "I NEED U" and "Dope" introduced a more emotionally direct register, with subject matter oriented around youth, anxiety, and self-acceptance. "I NEED U" gave them their first major music show win in South Korea. The shift in tone resonated well beyond their initial fanbase and accelerated international word-of-mouth through social media platforms, where their fandom — known as ARMY — became one of the most organized supporter communities in the industry.

Music and discography

BTS's discography spans hip-hop, pop, R&B, and EDM, with the group's creative identity shaped in part by member-driven songwriting and production. RM and Suga in particular have been credited as composers and lyricists across multiple releases. The 2020 period represented a pronounced commercial peak: *Map of the Soul: 7*, the album *Be*, and the singles "Black Swan," "ON," "Life Goes On," and "Dynamite" arrived in rapid succession. "Life Goes On," recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, became the first Korean-language song to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. "Dynamite," an English-language disco-pop track, achieved the group's first Hot 100 number one and was followed by "Butter" and "Permission to Dance" in 2021, both of which also charted at the top of that chart.

The 2021 single "Film Out," a collaboration with Japanese rock band Back Number, topped the Oricon singles chart in Japan. The compilation *BTS, the Best* also performed strongly in that market. Beyond official releases, the group has contributed to soundtrack and collaborative projects, and individual members have released solo material under their own names.

The group's fifth studio album, *Arirang*, released ahead of their 13th debut anniversary in 2025–2026, added another chapter to their catalog. Its title track "SWIM" reached number one on the Billboard Global (Excl. US) chart, the group's seventh number one on that ranking and their longest-running this year, holding the top position for three consecutive weeks.

To mark their 13th anniversary on June 12, 2026, BTS released the new song "Come Over," produced by Suga with additional credits to RM and J-Hope. The track, which the group described as an expression of finding direction in moments of feeling lost, was widely interpreted as a message to ARMY following the period during which members completed mandatory South Korean military service.

Achievements

"Dynamite" surpassing 900 million cumulative streams on Japan's Oricon chart — making BTS the first foreign act to reach that threshold for a single song — reflects a sustained commercial presence across multiple markets simultaneously. "Permission to Dance" surpassed 500 million cumulative streams on the same platform. At the 2026 American Music Awards, the group won three awards including Artist of the Year, their first AMA grand prize in five years, returning to the top of that ceremony following their military service hiatus. RM, accepting the award, acknowledged ARMY directly and noted the significance of the recognition in the context of the group's recent absence.

The "BTS WORLD TOUR 'ARIRANG'" Las Vegas run drew 60,000 attendees per day across multiple nights, with total attendance projected at 250,000. The associated 'BTS THE CITY ARIRANG - LAS VEGAS' urban campaign included an exterior lighting takeover at the Sphere venue and a collaborative exhibition with ARTE MUSEUM.

Members

BTS consists of seven members: RM, Jin (sub-vocalist, visual), Suga (lead rapper), J-Hope (main dancer, sub-rapper, sub-vocalist), Jimin, V, and Jungkook. All seven are currently active with the group.

Activities

Following the completion of mandatory military service by the group's members — a hiatus that RM referenced at the 2026 AMAs — BTS returned to full group activity with the *Arirang* album cycle and an accompanying world tour. The Las Vegas leg of the tour was followed by a Busan concert at the Asiad Main Stadium on June 12–13, 2026, timed to the group's 13th debut anniversary and notable as the first Busan stage in nearly four years. The venue holds significance for members Jimin and Jungkook, both of whom are from the city. The Busan concerts, which drew approximately 110,000 attendees, were marked by concert delays on consecutive nights — a logistical issue the group's agency addressed publicly — alongside what members described as a celebration of their Korean identity and long-term relationship with ARMY.
