S#arp (샵)
DisbandedWhen co-ed groups were a relative novelty in late-1990s Korean pop, S#arp carved out enough of a commercial and critical foothold to take home a Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Mixed Group — a distinction that underlined how the seven-member act stood apart from the largely gender-segregated idol landscape of the era. Active from 1998, the group combined dance-pop production with a lineup that balanced male and female voices, a format that would remain uncommon in the genre for years after their disbandment.
Debut and Formation
S#arp formed in 1998, bringing together seven members across distinct performance roles. The group's dual-leader structure — shared between John Kim, who also served as lead rapper, and Seokhyun, who held the main rapper position — gave the ensemble an unusually distributed sense of authority. Jihye anchored the vocal side of the group as main vocalist, while Chris and Heejong contributed additional rap depth. Sori took on both sub-rapper and lead dancer duties, and Jiyoung rounded out the lineup. The co-ed configuration was central to the group's identity, setting their sound and visual presentation apart from the single-gender groups that dominated the domestic market at the time.
Music and Discography
Both of S#arp's known studio albums arrived in 2001, relatively late in what proved to be a short active run. *4ever Feel So Good* and *Flat [♭]* were released that year, each rooted in the dance-pop sound that defined much of Korean idol output in that period. The back-to-back release schedule suggested an attempt to consolidate their audience before the group dissolved. Little in the material points to crossover activity or extended promotional campaigns beyond the domestic market, but the albums represent the primary recorded document of the group's work.
Achievements
S#arp's Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Mixed Group remains the most concrete marker of industry recognition attached to the act. The award acknowledged not just the group's output but the specific difficulty of sustaining a co-ed format in a market where it rarely took hold commercially.

After Disbandment
The group disbanded sometime around 2003, and the years that followed brought at least one documented personal rift among former members. Singer Lee Ji-hye, who performed under the name Ji-hye within the group, spoke publicly in 2026 about a conflict with fellow member Seo Ji-young that had lasted 23 years following the disbandment. Ji-hye described a chance reunion with Seo Ji-young in Jeju and said the two had since reconciled and made plans to meet again — a postscript that, while personal rather than professional, illustrates both the longevity of relationships formed within the group and the weight that the disbandment carried for at least some of its members.
