VIXX (빅스)

"Voodoo Doll," released in late 2013, crystallized what VIXX had been building since their debut: a theatrical approach to K-pop that leaned into dark mythology, horror imagery, and elaborately staged performance concepts at a time when the genre's mainstream leaned heavily toward bright, upbeat choreography. The six-member group from Jellyfish Entertainment carved out a distinct space in the early 2010s idol landscape by treating each comeback as a conceptual statement rather than a single release, and that identity has sustained a fanbase — known as ST☆RLIGHT — across more than a decade of activity.

Debut and early identity

VIXX debuted on May 24, 2012, with "Super Hero," a track that positioned the group alongside the bright, approachable sound common to new idol acts of that era. The early period also included "Rock Ur Body" and "On and On," but it was the 2013 mini album Hyde — drawing on the Jekyll and Hyde duality — that began signaling the group's longer-term creative direction. The companion release Jekyll later that year reinforced the theme, and "Voodoo Doll," built around ritual and horror aesthetics, became the work most closely associated with the group's signature style. The full-length Voodoo (2013) gathered that momentum into a cohesive project.

Music and conceptual approach

Where many contemporaries cycled through seasonal concepts, VIXX developed extended conceptual arcs. The 2016 Conception trilogy — released across three separate EPs, Zelos, Hades, and Kratos, compiled on VIXX 2016 Conception Ker — drew on Greek mythology and remains one of the more formally ambitious album projects of that generation of K-pop groups. Earlier, the 2014 EPs Eternity and Error showed the group could move between emotional balladry and darker electronic-pop without abandoning their theatrical framing.

"Shangri-La" (2017) marked a tonal shift toward East Asian visual aesthetics and traditional instrumentation, demonstrating range beyond the gothic palette they had become associated with. The group also released material in Japan, including the EP La La La – Ai o Arigatō (2017). The studio albums Eau de VIXX and Reincarnation (both 2018) rounded out their most active release period.

The group's two main vocalists, Leo and Ken, provided a strong melodic foundation across this body of work, and their presence anchored the more vocally demanding cuts within projects that also incorporated choreography-driven performance pieces.

Members

VIXX comprises six members: N (Cha Hak-yeon), who served as the group's leader and has built a parallel profile as an actor; Leo, a main vocalist; Ken, a main vocalist; Ravi, who handled rap and produced material as his solo career developed; Hongbin; and Hyuk.

Activities beyond music

N's career outside the group has been particularly visible. Under the agency 51K, he has taken on acting roles across drama and musical theatre, and in early 2026 he appeared in the Coupang Play series *Absolute Value of Romance*, a BL drama co-starring N.Flying's Kim Jae-hyun that drew notable attention for its performances. Ravi developed a solo rap and production career that ran concurrently with group schedules during the group's peak years.

Reunion and continued presence

After a prolonged hiatus from full-group activity, VIXX reunited for a concert in early 2026 — their first complete lineup show in approximately seven years. Demand was sufficient that emergency additional dates were scheduled. N subsequently announced plans for a 14th-anniversary event ahead of the group's May 2026 milestone, marking the continued investment both members and their audience maintain in the act's shared identity. The reunion and its reception underlined that, whatever the pace of releases, the group's conceptual work from 2013 to 2018 left a durable impression on the segment of K-pop fandom that followed them.
