AKMU (악뮤)

When sibling duo AKMU — Chanhyuk and Suhyun — debuted on April 7, 2014, under YG Entertainment, they arrived with an unusual profile for a K-pop act: folk-inflected songwriting, acoustic arrangements, and material the pair had largely developed themselves. Their debut album *Play* introduced that sensibility to a wide audience and established the duo as a distinct presence within a label better known for hip-hop and dance-oriented acts.

Debut & Formation

AKMU, also written as Akdong Musician (악뮤 in Korean), formed as a brother-sister duo and signed to YG Entertainment ahead of their 2014 debut. Their entry into the industry was notable for the degree of creative input Chanhyuk in particular brought to the songwriting process — a rarity at the debut stage in K-pop's trainee system. *Play*, released that same year, laid down the template the duo would refine across subsequent releases: melodic, lyrically oriented pop with folk and acoustic textures that sat at an angle to mainstream K-pop convention.

Music & Discography

The years following *Play* saw AKMU work through a sequence of releases that balanced full-length albums with extended plays. The 2016 EP *Spring* and the 2017 album *Winter* continued the duo's seasonal-themed body of work, with *Summer Episode*, also from 2017, rounding out that period of output. The 2021 EP *Next Episode* marked a return after a period of reduced activity, and the album *Sailing* represents a later chapter in their discography. Across these projects, the duo's sound has drawn consistently on folk music as a foundation while remaining broadly within the K-pop commercial sphere — an approach that has allowed them to cultivate a dedicated audience, known as Akkademy, without fully conforming to the genre's more production-heavy mainstream.
