Shin Ye-eun Opens Up About 'Doctor on the Edge' Role and Return to Variety TV
Actor Shin Ye-eun is opening up about her recent absence from variety television. The star of the ENA Monday-Tuesday drama "Doctor on the Edge" sat down for an interview at a cafe in Seoul's Samcheong-dong neighborhood on the 7th, discussing her latest role and what fans can expect next.
"Doctor on the Edge" is a medical romance set on Pyeondong Island, a remote and notorious place most people try to avoid. The drama follows public health doctor Do Ji-ui, played by Lee Jae-wook, and Yuk Ha-ri, a nurse with a past she keeps hidden. Shin Ye-eun plays Yuk Ha-ri, a university hospital nurse who returns to her hometown of Pyeondong Island carrying her own secrets.
For Shin Ye-eun, the project marked a step forward as an actor. "While filming 'Doctor on the Edge,' I wanted to pull out every emotion the character could possibly feel and bring it to the surface," she said. "I can't say I'm 100 percent satisfied with the result, but when it came to playing Yuk Ha-ri, I gave it everything I had."
She said the role changed how she thinks about her craft. "I believe you have to care about a character so deeply that just thinking about them in your daily life can make you cry. I felt that with this project. It made me promise myself to approach every future role the same way."
Shin Ye-eun also spoke about her hopes for more variety appearances. "Variety shows are always fun and I enjoy them," she said. "At the same time, part of me worries about whether I can live up to what people expect. Still, I'd love to appear on more of them going forward."
Asked about the so-called "dance ban" her agency once placed on her, Shin Ye-eun smiled and said, "That's been lifted now." She added, "Honestly, my company isn't the type to hold me back. When I had to take on a project like 'The Glory,' they were worried that if I came across as too bright on variety shows, it might make it harder for viewers to buy into the character. So I held back for a while. But not anymore."
