Han So-hee Hires Choi Min-sik as Her 'Silver Intern' in K-Remake of "The Intern"
Actors Choi Min-sik and Han So-hee are heading to theaters this Chuseok holiday with the Korean remake of "The Intern," directed by Kim Do-young. The film reimagines the 2015 Hollywood hit for a Korean setting, following a 37-year industry veteran who restarts his career as a "silver intern" at a young CEO's company.
The film centers on Seon-woo, played by Han So-hee, a startup CEO whose fashion brand has become a dark horse of the industry just three years after launch. Her office life shifts when Ki-ho, played by Choi Min-sik, joins the company as a silver intern after nearly four decades of experience in the workforce.
The project is a Korean reinterpretation of Nancy Meyers's 2015 film "The Intern," which starred Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway and became a global hit. Choi plays Ki-ho, a seasoned professional starting fresh as a rookie intern. Han plays Seon-woo, a workaholic CEO in her third year of running the company. Director Kim Do-young, whose previous film was "Once We Were Us" (Manyage Uri), directs the workplace comedy about coworkers meeting across generations.
The first poster shows Ki-ho and Seon-woo walking side by side on his first day. Ki-ho's smile mixes the ease of a long career with the small nerves of a new hire, while Seon-woo carries the confidence of a CEO who runs her own company. The tagline reads, "Starting today, I'm going to work."
The trailer opens with Ki-ho's intern interview. Asked about his strengths and weaknesses, he answers, "My strength is that I have a lot of experience. My weakness is that I'm also old." He lands the internship at a company called Woototo. Arriving in a crisp suit on his first day, he unpacks a set of items onto his desk one by one: cream buns, oranda snacks, a thermos, a desk clock, a pencil case and ink. The scene captures a rookie who is also a veteran.
Ki-ho then searches online for tips on how to work with younger coworkers and looks up recent Korean slang, hinting at the everyday collisions ahead for a silver intern trying to adjust to a new office.
Seon-woo, meanwhile, is thrown off the moment she sees Ki-ho's resume photo. "Who is this? He looks scary," she says. "I don't get along with any adult in this world," she adds, uneasy about having him assigned as her direct intern. Ki-ho counters with a formal greeting, "I'm Kim Ki-ho, the new intern," setting up the odd-couple rhythm at the heart of the film. Actors Kim Jun-han and Ryu Hye-young round out the cast as vice president Young-hwan and secretary Min-a.
"The Intern" opens in South Korean theaters on Sept. 16.
