Seo Kang-joon Returns to Romance in 'A Love Other Than Yours,' But Ratings Lag

Actor Seo Kang-joon is back in a romance for the first time in years with the new KBS2 drama "A Love Other Than Yours." Now in his 14th year in the industry, he has moved across genres and built a solid track record as an actor. Even so, his looks tend to draw more attention than his performances. That pattern is repeating with his latest project.

"A Love Other Than Yours," which premiered on Oct. 12 as a KBS2 Saturday-Sunday drama, follows a couple 10 years into their relationship: Nam Gung-ho, played by Seo Kang-joon, and Lee Mi-do, played by Ahn Eun-jin. It is Seo Kang-joon's first romance since the 2020 series "When the Weather Is Fine," and expectations were high from the moment the cast was announced. But through the first four episodes, ratings have stayed in the 2% range, making for a shaky start.

Ratings aside, his acting has been steady. He moves naturally from the fresh feeling of a new couple to the ease and quiet boredom that builds over a decade together. When his character is blindsided by a breakup and then finds himself drawn to someone else, Seo Kang-joon handles the tangled emotions with restraint. His understated performance matches the tone of a grounded love story and pulls viewers in.

Still, before and after the premiere, most of the online buzz has been about how he looks. Teasers, posters, and short-form clips cut from broadcast scenes have all put his visuals front and center, spreading across online communities and social media. With ratings remaining around 2%, though, that buzz is not translating into actual viewership. The show builds its characters and emotions slowly, and short clips of a few standout moments don't fully capture what makes the drama work.

Seo Kang-joon's looks have been his strongest asset since his debut. Fair skin and unusually light eyes gave him a striking presence that pulled audiences in from the start. The nickname "face genius" has followed him from project to project. In 2016, he found one of his defining roles as Baek In-ho in "Cheese in the Trap," closely matching the handsome character's appereace from the original webtoon.

He has also kept building his acting resume. On KBS2's "Are You Human?" he played dual roles as the human Nam Shin and the AI robot Nam Shin III. In OCN's "Watcher" he showed a dry, weightier side that felt new for him. From romance to crime to science fiction, Seo Kang-joon has stretched his range across very different genres.

The problem is that he has not landed a signature role bigger than Baek In-ho in over 10 years. Each new project has pushed him into a different lane, but he has tended to pick work with narrower appeal, and none of it has stuck with the wider public the way "Cheese in the Trap" did. Last year he won the top acting prize at the MBC Drama Awards for "Undercover High School," but the competition was relatively thin that year, and the show itself did not break through on ratings or buzz. Whether it truly counts as one of his defining works remains an open question.

"A Love Other Than Yours" is only four episodes in, so it is too early to call it a hit or a miss. As Nam Gung-ho and Lee Mi-do's relationship starts to fall apart in earnest, Seo Kang-joon will have room to show a wider emotional range. His looks have led the conversation so far, but attention could still shift to the character and the performance as the show goes on. The question now is whether this project can move him from "a face you trust to watch" to "an actor you trust to watch."
