XLOV Makes a Comeback Today With "i=!", Exploring Choices and Roads Not Taken
K-pop group XLOV is returning with new music. The group will release its third mini album, "i=!" (pronounced "i equals i"), on Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. KST.
The album explores the idea that a single choice can lead to different outcomes. It captures the fear and confusion of standing at a crossroads while suggesting that the road not taken may hold possibilities of its own.
"i=!" features eight tracks, including the double title tracks "Hush" and "Tooth Gem Chiwawa."
"Hush" combines heavy bass with Eastern musical elements and experimental sounds. The song contrasts two divine figures: one that guides people toward the right path and another that intensifies their nightmares. Through these opposing forces, the track explores the dual nature of life and the sense of helplessness caused by trauma.
The accompanying music video draws on a grand, mysterious Eastern-inspired aesthetic. The members' sharp choreography and expressive vocals are expected to heighten the song's restrained tension.
The other title track, "Tooth Gem Chiwawa," layers distorted electronic sounds and repeating vocal samples over a house beat. It tells a dreamlike story about a wolf raised by a family of Chihuahuas who comes to believe it can become a Chihuahua too.
The rest of the album spans several genres. "Cat Move" brings the bold, teasing charm of a cat into electronic dance music. "All Tied Up," a unit track by Rui and Haru, combines heavy bass with dreamy synths. "Silence," performed by Wumuti and Hyun, blends piano melodies with jazz-based R&B.
The tracklist is rounded out by a sped-up version of "Tooth Gem Chiwawa" and instrumental versions of both title tracks.
The members also contributed to the music. Wumuti worked on the songwriting and composition of several tracks, including both title songs, while Hyun contributed to the lyrics of "Silence."
Since its debut single, "I'mma Be," XLOV has built its musical identity around distinctive concepts and storytelling. The new album expands that world through themes of opposing forces and the possibilities created by individual choices. By bringing together electronic dance, hyperpop and jazz-based R&B, the group continues to explore different musical styles.
