Amber (엠버)

The Taiwanese-American artist who made an immediate impression on K-pop audiences as the sharp-tongued, skateboard-riding rapper of f(x), Amber Liu built a reputation that extended well beyond the group's experimental SM Entertainment sound. Known for a stage presence and aesthetic that deliberately subverted the genre's conventional femininity, she became one of the more distinctly recognizable figures to emerge from the early-2010s idol era.

Debut and time with f(x)

Amber joined SM Entertainment's multinational girl group f(x) at its debut in 2009, taking on the roles of main rapper and sub vocalist. The group became known for an uncommonly adventurous sonic palette — electronic, art-pop, and synth-driven — that set it apart from the label's other acts, and Amber's clipped, confident delivery was a consistent anchor in that sound. Her look, characterized by short hair and streetwear styling at a time when girl group presentation was tightly codified, drew significant attention and made her a talking point in wider conversations about gender expression in K-pop.

Solo work and independent activity

Following the gradual wind-down of f(x)'s group activities, Amber pursued a solo path, releasing music under her own name. Her solo output leaned into English-language pop and hip-hop, reflecting her background growing up in Los Angeles, and she cultivated an audience across multiple platforms, addressing themes of identity and self-acceptance with a directness unusual for the genre. She has remained active as a solo artist and as a content creator, maintaining a visible presence in both the Korean entertainment sphere and the broader Asian-American creative community.

Personal life and public persona

In 2026, Amber drew attention when she spoke openly about her friendship with Korean YouTuber Cha Hyun-seung, who had recovered from leukemia. The two have maintained a close bond across borders — Cha has described acting as her driver during her visits to Korea — a detail that offered a characteristically unguarded glimpse into the kind of genuine, low-key connections Amber has tended to make public, in contrast to the more managed image typical of artists from major Korean labels.
