f(x) (에프엑스)
Active4 Walls, the title track and album f(x) released in October 2015, arrived as something of a thesis statement for one of SM Entertainment's most unconventional acts: a deep-house-inflected synth-pop record that felt more at home in a European club than in the polished corridors of fourth-generation idol pop. That it landed in f(x)'s sixth year together, after a run of increasingly eclectic releases, underscored what had become the group's defining trait — a willingness to operate at the experimental edge of mainstream K-pop. Active since 2009, the five-member group built a discography that consistently prioritized texture and sonic risk over formula, earning a devoted following and a place in critical conversations about where the genre could go.
Debut & Formation
SM Entertainment launched f(x) in September 2009 with the single "La Cha Ta", assembling a lineup that was notably multinational from the outset. The group's formation brought together members from South Korea, China, and the United States, a configuration that gave SM an internationally oriented act distinct from its other girl group properties at the time. "Chocolate Love" and "Chu" followed in quick succession the same year, establishing early visibility and a sound that leaned toward electropop. The 2010 extended play "Nu ABO" sharpened the group's identity, and by the time "Pinocchio (Danger)" arrived in 2011 as their first full-length album's lead single, f(x) had settled into a style that set them apart within SM's own roster.
Music & Discography
The group's catalog charts a sustained move toward stranger, denser sonic territory. "Pinocchio (Danger)" was propulsive and hook-driven, but "Hot Summer" — a 2011 single that became one of their most recognizable tracks — showed a capacity for lighter, sun-drenched pop without abandoning their synth-forward production preferences. "Electric Shock" (2012) pushed the electropop elements further, and its title track became a fan and critical touchstone.
The 2013 full-length "Pink Tape" is often cited as the clearest articulation of f(x)'s creative ambitions. Its lead single "Rum Pum Pum Pum" was angular and rhythmically unusual for a K-pop title track, and the album's breadth — spanning noise-influenced production, funkier arrangements, and softer melodic writing — suggested a group and a label willing to treat a girl group release as an artistic document rather than a commercial package. "Red Light" (2014) continued in an aggressive, maximalist direction, its title track one of the more abrasive sounds to come from a major SM act.
"4 Walls" (2015) represented a tonal pivot. The album's approach to deep house and atmospheric synth-pop was more restrained and cohesive than its predecessors, and the title track in particular drew widespread attention for the sophistication of its production. The accompanying "Winter Garden" EP extended the same aesthetic. A Japan-market single pairing "4 Walls / Cowboy" followed in 2016, along with "All Mine," which proved to be among the group's final releases as a complete unit.
Members
f(x) debuted and operated as a five-member group, with each member bringing a distinct profile to the lineup.
- Victoria (leader) — Main dancer, lead rapper, sub vocalist; the group's Chinese member, she also maintained an active solo career in the Chinese entertainment market.
- Amber — Main rapper and sub vocalist; an American-raised member whose public persona extended well beyond the group, including solo music and variety appearances.
- Luna — Main vocalist and lead dancer; widely regarded within the fandom as the group's strongest pure singer.
- Sulli — Sub vocalist, sub rapper, and one of the group's designated visuals; she pursued an increasingly independent path before her passing in 2019.
- Krystal — Lead vocalist, visual, and the group's youngest member (maknae); younger sister of Girls' Generation's Jessica, she built a parallel profile as an actress.
Activities
After "Red Light" and the departure of Sulli from active group participation, f(x) continued as an effectively four-member act before releasing "4 Walls" in that reduced configuration. Following the album cycle, group-wide activity slowed considerably. Members pursued solo and individual projects: Victoria maintained her career in China, Krystal deepened her acting work, Luna released solo music, and Amber built a presence as a solo artist and personality, later relocating to Los Angeles. No formal disbandment announcement has been issued, though the group has not released new material as a collective since 2016.
Legacy
f(x)'s significance within K-pop rests largely on the kind of creative space they occupied — and the rarity of an SM girl group being given the latitude to occupy it. Across four studio albums, their catalog moved consistently away from the romantic and aspirational themes that dominated the genre toward something more abstract and sonically adventurous. "Pink Tape" and "4 Walls" in particular are regularly invoked in discussions about K-pop's artistic ceiling during the early-to-mid 2010s. The group never achieved the commercial dominance of contemporaries such as Girls' Generation, but their influence on the production and aesthetic choices of subsequent girl groups has been noted by critics and artists alike. What f(x) left behind is a discography unusual for its coherence and its willingness to be difficult.
