Red Velvet's main dancer and lead vocalist, Kang Seul Gi — known professionally as Seulgi — first drew wider individual attention through "Wow Thing," a 2018 collaborative single that showcased a harder-edged performance style distinct from her group work. Under SM Entertainment since her trainee years with SM Rookies, she has built a parallel solo and sub-unit career alongside her Red Velvet commitments, spanning girl-group superunit GOT the Beat and her own debut mini album.
Debut & Formation
Seulgi trained under SM Entertainment for an extended period before Red Velvet's debut, appearing in the company's SM Rookies pre-debut showcase program. She debuted with Red Velvet in 2014, occupying the roles of main dancer and lead vocalist — a combination that positioned her as one of the group's most visually prominent performers. Her earlier credit as main vocalist and main dancer in Girls Next Door points to a training period that prioritized both disciplines in equal measure.
Music & Discography
"Wow Thing," released in 2018 as part of the SM Station project, was an early indicator of Seulgi's solo range, pairing her with labelmates in a track that leaned into a confident, funk-inflected pop sound. It remains her most-cited representative work from that period.
Her first dedicated solo release came in 2022 with 28 Reasons, a mini album built around its title track — a moody, atmospheric production that drew on a darker palette than Red Velvet's dual "red and velvet" concept. The project gave her a vehicle to define a solo identity more fully than sub-unit work had allowed.
In 2025, she returned with Accidentally on Purpose, an extended play that continued her solo trajectory under SM Entertainment.
Beyond her own releases, Seulgi has been an active participant in SM's girl-group superunit formations. She is a member of GOT the Beat (갓 더 비트), which brought together artists from Red Velvet, aespa, and Girls' Generation under the Girls On Top project umbrella.
Members
Seulgi is a solo artist as well as a member of several ensembles; her primary group affiliation is Red Velvet, and she is one half of the sub-unit Red Velvet – IRENE & SEULGI, which released its own dedicated material separately from the full group.
Activities
Alongside her recording work, Seulgi is credited as a model, an activity consistent with SM Entertainment's broader practice of placing its artists in fashion and brand contexts. Her performance background — reflected in her main dancer designation across multiple projects — has kept live and visual performance central to her public profile.
