Red Velvet (레드벨벳)
Active"Bad Boy," released in early 2018 as the lead single from The Perfect Red Velvet, marked a turn for Red Velvet that crystallized what had always set the group apart within SM Entertainment's roster: a studied cool that sat somewhere between electropop and contemporary R&B, miles from the bright, candy-colored energy that dominated much of the fourth-generation girl-group landscape. The five-member Seoul-based group had spent the years since their August 2014 debut building a dual identity — brash pop spectacle on one side, moody, textured balladry on the other — and "Bad Boy" demonstrated that the two registers could, in fact, coexist in a single track.
Debut and Formation
Red Velvet debuted on August 1, 2014, with the single "Happiness," an abrupt, sample-heavy pop record that introduced Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Joy to audiences still processing SHINee and f(x)'s recent output from the same label. The group's name signaled a built-in concept: "Red" for the bright, performance-driven pop side, "Velvet" for the softer, R&B-inflected one. A fifth member, Yeri, joined in March 2015, completing the lineup that has remained intact ever since.
The early catalog moved quickly. "Be Natural," a second 2014 single, leaned into the Velvet register with a restrained, sample-based groove. The 2015 EP Ice Cream Cake sharpened the group's image considerably, and its title track became one of the more cited examples of the era's taste for maximalist, collage-style K-pop production. Later that year, "Dumb Dumb" — a deliberately repetitive, almost hypnotic electropop track from the group's first full-length, The Red — reinforced the sense that Red Velvet was operating with a distinct sonic logic rather than simply chasing trends.
Music and Discography
The group's output across the mid-to-late 2010s was prolific and tonally wide. "Automatic" and "One of These Nights," both from the Velvet-coded releases The Velvet (2016) and subsequent EPs, foregrounded Wendy's main-vocal command and the group's capacity for slow-burning R&B. "Russian Roulette" (2016) swung back toward the bright, unsettling pop of the Red side, its cheerful melody sitting against narrative imagery of casual menace — a tonal dissonance that became something of a signature.
"Red Flavor" (2017) from The Red Summer EP became one of the group's most commercially recognized titles in the domestic market, a sugar-rush summer track that balanced Joy and Seulgi's performance-forward delivery with Wendy and Irene's more measured contributions. Perfect Velvet (2017) and its lead single "Peek-a-Boo" pushed deeper into the Gothic-pop territory the Velvet half of the concept allowed, earning considerable critical attention for the group's willingness to stay in an uncomfortable register.
"Bad Boy," from the repackage The Perfect Red Velvet (2018), proved to be a crossover moment of a different kind — cooler, slower, and more internationally accessible than much of what preceded it, it drew comparisons to Western R&B production and expanded the group's profile beyond the core domestic fanbase. The year continued with "Power Up," a bouncy summer release, and "RBB (Really Bad Boy)," a harder-edged December single, demonstrating the group's continued comfort cycling between moods within a single calendar year.
The 2019 ReVe Festival series — Day 1 and Day 2 — produced "Zimzalabim," a deliberately disorienting track that divided listeners but underscored the group's refusal to smooth out their odder creative instincts.
Members
Red Velvet's five-member lineup, as established since 2015, is as follows:
- Irene — leader, main rapper, lead dancer, and visual center
- Seulgi — main dancer and lead vocalist
- Wendy — main vocalist
- Joy — lead rapper and sub vocalist
- Yeri — sub vocalist, sub rapper, and the group's youngest member (maknae)
Activities
Beyond group releases, the members have maintained parallel solo and acting careers. Wendy has established a significant solo profile, releasing OST contributions and individual singles across multiple years; in early 2026 she released "EMOTIONS," a collaboration with American singer-songwriter Alec Benjamin, produced through Danal Entertainment and Devine Channel. Yeri has shifted substantially toward acting, appearing in the 2026 drama *Azur Spring* in a physically demanding role requiring diving training — a notable step in a screen career she has built since departing SM Entertainment and signing with Blitzway. Joy has continued solo activities alongside her group commitments.
Both Wendy and Yeri departed from SM Entertainment individually, which made the group's announced August 2026 comeback — a full-group return with a new album involving all five members, their first in over two years — a notable development. A fan concert marking the group's 12th debut anniversary was also scheduled alongside the release.
Standing
Red Velvet's decade-plus career represents one of the more sustained runs of any SM girl group, built on a concept flexible enough to absorb multiple sonic directions without fragmenting the group's identity. The Red/Velvet duality, introduced at debut, gave the group structural room that allowed "Peek-a-Boo" and "Red Flavor" to coexist in the same discography without either feeling anomalous. Their fandom, known as ReVeluv, has remained active through extended hiatuses and the logistical complications of members operating under different agencies — circumstances that lend the 2026 full-group reunion added weight as the group enters its second decade.
