Turbo arrived in the summer of 1995 as one of South Korea's early experiments in blending pop melody with hip-hop energy, releasing their debut album 280km/h Speed the same month they launched. Over the following three years, the trio built a discography that tracked the rapid evolution of the mid-to-late 1990s Korean pop landscape, releasing four albums before the decade was out.

Debut and Early Discography

The group debuted on July 1, 1995, under what would become Turbo JK Company. Their first album, *280km/h Speed*, set the kinetic tone that would define their identity — the title itself a statement of intent. A second album, *New Sensation*, followed in 1996, sustaining their commercial momentum through a period when Korean pop was still defining its own vocabulary. *Born Again…* arrived in 1997, and *Perfect Love* closed out their 1990s run in 1998, giving the group a compact but consistent output across their active years.

Members

Turbo operated as a three-member group, with roles that divided the group's musical labor distinctly.

  • Jongkook — vocalist, and the member who would go on to the most prominent solo public profile
  • Jungnam — rapper and dancer
  • Mikey — rapper, and the group's maknae (youngest member)

Beyond the Group

The years since Turbo's active peak have taken the members in markedly different directions. Jongkook — known widely as Kim Jong-kook — built a sustained solo career and became a fixture of Korean variety television, a trajectory that has kept his name in circulation decades after the group's 1990s run. In 2026, he appeared on the program *Problem Child in House* to discuss his time in Turbo, speaking on-air about singer Lee Hyun-woo's behind-the-scenes role in the group's story and recounting the culture of the 1990s music scene — a moment that drew on nostalgia for an era when Turbo were among South Korea's prominent acts.

Jungnam's path has been considerably more turbulent. Reports surfaced in early 2026 that he had departed from Turbo, suffered losses in a fraud case amounting to approximately 200 million won, and was subsequently found working at a scallop farm while continuing to perform on stage at night — a detail that illustrated both the distance some artists travel from their commercial peaks and the persistence that can characterize those careers.
