WJSN — known in Korean as 우주소녀, or Cosmic Girls — marked a decade of activity in early 2026 with a comeback album that arrived after a hiatus of more than 1,000 days, a return their fandom, Ujung, received as a genuinely emotional event. The group's longevity across a shifting K-pop landscape, combined with the individual careers its members have built in parallel, defines where WJSN stands as it enters its second decade.

Debut and formation

WJSN debuted on February 25, 2016, under Starship Entertainment as a large-format girl group, a structure that was already a familiar competitive strategy in K-pop but that WJSN pushed further by incorporating Chinese members into its original lineup. The multinational composition — Korean and Chinese members together — reflected industry efforts during that period to build acts with built-in audience reach across markets.

In March 2023, three Chinese members departed the group. Around the same time, members Luda and Dawon reached the end of their contracts, though both continued participating in group activities. The reorganization settled WJSN into a ten-member configuration, and the group continued operating under that structure into its tenth anniversary year.

Members

The current active lineup consists of twelve members as listed in the group's official roster: Seola, Bona, Xuan Yi, Luda, Dawon, Eunseo, Cheng Xiao, Mei Qi, Dayoung, Yeonjung, Yeoreum, and Soobin. Member Exy (Choo So-jung) serves as the group's leader.

Music and individual activity

In the years between WJSN's last group release and the 2026 comeback, several members pursued careers substantial enough to stand independently. Exy, the group's leader, established herself as a songwriter and music producer, earning writing and production credits for acts including IVE and ILLIT — work that places her among the small number of idol-group members who have crossed into professional songwriting for peers at major labels.

Dayoung mounted the most visible solo campaign of the group's anniversary period. After quietly traveling to Los Angeles to work with local composers — reportedly reaching out to collaborators directly via direct message — she released the solo track "BODY," which reached number one on music shows and drew invitations to the Waterbomb festival. A second digital single, "What's a Girl to Do," followed in 2026 with a music video teaser that signaled a continuation of the confident, sensual performance direction she established with "BODY." Her profile appearances on variety programs including "The Manager" and "Radio Star" further extended her solo visibility, including a notable anecdote in which a dancer in her music video was revealed to be the daughter of actress Angelina Jolie.

Luda has built a parallel acting career with increasing ambition in its genre range. She appeared in the body-horror film "Pink Box" as Ban Ji-woo, a high school influencer — her first work in the genre — and was subsequently cast as the female lead in the fusion historical drama "Love WiFi-Gung," in which she plays Sohyang, a palace maid navigating a time-transcending romance. The historical drama role marked a first for her in the genre, ten years after her group debut.

Bona continued to attract attention during the same period, maintaining a public profile primarily through fashion and visual-focused coverage.

A tenth-anniversary comeback

The 2026 group comeback carried particular weight given the circumstances surrounding it. More than 1,000 days had passed since WJSN's previous full-group release, and members took to social media to describe their feelings about the new album in terms that read as genuinely reflective rather than promotional. The release coincided almost exactly with the group's tenth debut anniversary, framing it as a marker of continuity for a group that had navigated lineup changes, contract transitions, and a long period without collective output.

The anniversary timing also prompted broader reflection on individual members' trajectories — Dayoung, Luda, and Exy in particular representing three distinct paths, in performance, acting, and songwriting respectively, that WJSN's members have taken without abandoning the group framework.

Standing

Few K-pop girl groups formed in 2016 remain active under their original name with a substantial portion of their lineup intact a decade later. WJSN's ability to sustain group identity through a major lineup restructuring, an extended release gap, and a period in which individual members' careers occasionally outpaced the group's collective visibility is, in practical terms, an uncommon outcome. The 2026 comeback, and the individual work that surrounded it, suggested the group's second decade would be shaped less by a single dominant commercial moment than by the accumulated credibility of its members operating across multiple entertainment sectors simultaneously.
