Momoland (모모랜드)
On Hiatus인연 엔터테인먼트
"Bboom Bboom," released in January 2018, gave MOMOLAND a commercial breakthrough that separated the group from the crowded field of mid-tier girl groups struggling to gain traction after modest debuts. Built around a brash brass hook and a deliberately maximalist production style, the single drove the group's *Great!* EP to wide attention across Asia and established a template — high-energy, hook-driven pop with an unabashedly playful tone — that the group would carry through its most active years.
Debut and formation
MOMOLAND emerged from a reality competition format, an increasingly common route for K-pop acts in the mid-2010s. The group debuted on November 10, 2016 under MLD Entertainment and released *Welcome to Momoland*, an extended play that introduced the act to a domestic audience without yet generating the crossover attention that would come later. Early singles including "Freeze" and "Wonderful Love" in 2017 kept the group active on the promotional circuit as the label worked to establish the lineup's identity. The group is currently managed by Inyeon Entertainment.
Music and discography
The trajectory of the group's catalog divides fairly cleanly into a pre- and post-"Bboom Bboom" era. Before 2018, MOMOLAND's releases read as competent but unremarkable girl-group fare. "Bboom Bboom" changed that calculus. The single's combination of retro-inflected horn arrangements and a relentlessly earworm chorus found traction well beyond South Korea, particularly in Southeast Asia, where the group developed a devoted following. The success of "Bboom Bboom" led directly to *Fun to the World*, a follow-up EP released later in 2018, and the single "Baam," which pushed a similar sonic sensibility — bright, percussive, and built for crowd participation — with enough variation to avoid feeling like a retread.
The group continued releasing material through 2019 and into 2020, including the single "I'm So Hot" and the EP *Show Me*, then the full-length *Chiri Chiri* and the 2020 EP *Starry Night*. A Japanese compilation, *Momoland The Best ~Korean Ver.~*, released in 2018, reflected the group's cross-border commercial activity during its peak period. The 2022 single "Yummy Yummy Love" marked a return to activity after a quieter stretch, though the group's commercial footing had shifted considerably from the heights of 2018.
Members
MOMOLAND's current nine-member lineup, led by Hyebin in the leader and rapper-vocalist role, spans a range of performance functions. Taeha and Ahin serve as main vocalists, while Daisy, credited as main dancer and lead rapper, and Jane, also a main dancer, anchor the group's performance presence. JooE functions as face of the group alongside her lead vocalist and dancer roles. Nancy holds the positions of lead vocalist, lead dancer, visual, center, and maknae. Nayun and Yeonwoo round out the lineup, with Yeonwoo holding the main rapper designation in addition to a vocalist and visual credit.
The editorial biography describes the group as multinational in composition, reflecting the broader industry trend during the mid-to-late 2010s of recruiting members from outside South Korea to expand regional appeal. Nancy, who carries an American background, became one of the group's more recognizable figures internationally during the 2018 peak period.
Activities
Beyond their recording work, individual members have pursued parallel projects. Yeonwoo, who had been active in the lineup during the group's peak years, transitioned toward acting after her time with the group and more recently appeared in the drama *Phobia* alongside actor Kim Hyun-jin. Reports in early 2026 also noted her appointment as CEO of a dating app, a somewhat unusual career pivot that drew media attention independent of her music career. These developments are individual pursuits rather than group activities, but they reflect the dispersed trajectories that K-pop groups often see among their members across an extended career timeline.
The group's fandom carries the name Merry-Go-Round.
Legacy
MOMOLAND's standing in the K-pop landscape is defined most clearly by a single concentrated burst of commercial relevance in 2018. "Bboom Bboom" remains the group's signature work and the track most likely to appear in retrospective coverage of the era. The group's ability to generate genuine regional traction in Southeast Asia at a time when many similarly sized acts remained largely domestic-facing is a meaningful part of that record. Whether the group's output since 2020 has added substantially to that legacy is a harder case to make on the available evidence, but the 2018 run was concrete enough that MOMOLAND occupies a distinct, if bounded, place in the period's commercial history.
