NCT
ActiveWhen SM Entertainment unveiled NCT in April 2016, the Seoul-based label was introducing something the industry had not quite seen before: a boy group built on an "unlimited membership" model, organized not as a fixed roster but as a constellation of rotating sub-units, each designed to target a distinct market or creative direction. Nearly a decade on, that structural experiment has produced one of K-pop's largest active ensembles — 29 members across multiple units, with a fandom known as NCTzen (the name positioning fans as citizens of NCT's expanding "Neo" world) spanning dozens of countries.
Debut and Formation
NCT launched on April 9, 2016, under SM Entertainment, with the name standing for Neo Culture Technology. Rather than debut as a single unified group, the act was conceived from the outset as a system: members would be assigned to units that could operate simultaneously and independently, with new members added over time rather than the lineup being fixed at debut. The first units to take shape were NCT U, a rotating performance unit with a flexible member count; NCT 127, anchored in Seoul and named for the city's longitude; and NCT Dream, initially composed of teenage members operating on a graduation-based model that was later revised to a fixed lineup. A fourth unit, WayV, followed and operates primarily in the Chinese-language market.
The scale of the enterprise expanded steadily across the years that followed. By the time SM announced NCT 2026 — the group's tenth-anniversary project — the active member count had reached 21 for that campaign, with the broader collective numbering 29.
Music and Discography
NCT's music has been defined in large part by its deliberate resistance to a single sound. Across its units, the group has moved between experimental SM-produced compositions — dense, layered arrangements with unconventional structures — and more commercially accessible material aimed at specific regional audiences. NCT 127 became associated with abrasive, high-energy tracks that drew on hip-hop and electronic production; NCT Dream tended toward a cleaner, more melodic register; WayV produced Mandarin-language work styled for the Chinese market; and NCT U served as a vehicle for one-off pairings and conceptually distinct releases that drew from across the wider roster.
The "Neo" worldview — a loose narrative framework connecting the units — has been a recurring promotional device, most recently foregrounded in the NCT 2026 anniversary project, for which concept content across all 21 participating members was released sequentially alongside a pop-up event titled "POP UP : NEO GROUND."
Members
NCT's current roster of 29 includes five leaders and 24 members distributed across the group's units.
The five leaders are:
- Taeyong — leader, rapper, dancer, vocalist, center, and face of the group; one of the act's primary creative anchors since debut
- Doyoung — leader and vocalist
- Mark — leader of NCT Dream, rapper, dancer, and vocalist; departed SM Entertainment and all NCT units effective April 8, 2026, following a mutually agreed contract termination
- Kun — leader of WayV, vocalist, and rapper
- Sion — leader and lead vocalist
The remaining 24 members are: Taeil, Johnny, Jaehyun, Yuta, Winwin, Jungwoo, Lucas, Ten, Jaemin, Jeno, Haechan, Renjun, Chenle, Jisung, Shotaro, Sungchan, Xiaojun, Yangyang, Hendery, Riku, Ryo, Sakuya, Yushi, and Jaehee. Roles across the collective span lead and main vocalists, dancers, rappers, and visual positions.
Recent Activities
In early 2026, NCT marked the approach of its tenth anniversary with the launch of NCT 2026, a structured anniversary project involving sequential concept image releases for 21 members and the "POP UP : NEO GROUND" event opening on May 15, 2026. The project was framed as a reopening of the group's Neo worldview and represented one of the larger coordinated promotional efforts in the group's history.
That period was also marked by a significant departure. In April 2026, SM Entertainment confirmed that Mark would terminate his exclusive contract with the label effective April 8, 2026, concluding activity across all NCT units — NCT Dream, NCT 127, and NCT U. SM described the decision as reached through extensive mutual discussion. Mark had been among the most continuously active members across multiple units since the group's early years, and his exit was widely noted as leaving a substantial gap in the collective's lineup.
Separately, NCT and BTS were among the acts recognized in TenAsia's April 2026 K-Pop Boy Brand ranking, determined through global voting.
Standing
NCT's structural model — large, modular, internationally segmented — has remained unusual within the industry even as the group itself has grown into one of SM Entertainment's principal active acts. The tenth-anniversary project arriving in 2026 marks a moment of institutional consolidation for a group that has, across its run, operated more like an interconnected system than a conventional idol act.
