K-POP Journalist

I cover K-POP for K-POPIT, reporting on new music, artists, concerts and the industry from Seoul. A lot of my work happens on the ground. I attend comeback showcases and press conferences, interview artists about their music and report from concerts in Korea and overseas. I also write features that take a closer look at how K-POP is changing, particularly as more Korean artists build audiences and tour outside Korea. K-POP moves quickly, and so do the conversations around it. A song can take off overnight, a performance can suddenly bring new attention to an artist, and the way fans respond to a comeback can shift just as fast. Part of covering the industry is keeping up with those changes and understanding what people are actually talking about, both within Korea and outside it. I'm especially interested in the gap between how K-POP is covered and understood in Korea and how it is seen by fans abroad. Because I write for an international audience, I try to provide the Korean context behind a story rather than assume that everything translates on its own. I studied Communication at Cornell University and have lived and studied in both Korea and the United States. Before becoming a K-POP reporter, I worked at an English-language news outlet, covering stories for readers outside Korea. Working in both Korean and English has naturally shaped the way I report. I'm interested in how the same artist, song or issue can be understood differently depending on where the reader is coming from, and I try to keep that in mind when I write. Some days, I'm writing about a comeback or chart result as it happens. Other stories give me more time to sit down with artists, spend a night at a concert or talk to fans outside a venue. I like being able to do both. What I want from my reporting is to give readers a clearer picture of what's actually happening in K-POP, not only onstage but around it.
