Director Jang Hang-jun Recalls Shocking Medical Scare in Spain After Accidental Medication Overdose
Korean film director Jang Hang-jun has opened up about a frightening medical emergency in Spain after accidentally taking a double dose of his blood pressure medication. He shared the dramatic yet humorously told story on the YouTube channel VIVO TV during an episode released on June 17, alongside actress Choi Hwa-jung.
The anecdote resurfaced after another guest recalled breaking a leg while running abroad. "I had a very similar experience," Jang said, before walking the audience through what transpired during a professional trip to Spain with his directing crew.
The team had agreed to go for a morning jog together. While Jang routinely takes blood pressure medication every morning, he realized as they were heading out that he could not remember if he had already taken his pill. "Everyone told me, 'You probably didn't take it, right?' So I just took another one," he recalled. "You are never supposed to take two, but I took two."
The initial run felt refreshing, but things quickly took a turn. "It felt great once we started running because my blood pressure naturally went up during the exercise, so I didn't notice anything wrong," he explained. "But right after we reached our destination, everything suddenly started going black."
The group stopped at a local cafe for coffee, where Jang tried to power through the dizzy spell. "I am a self-proclaimed chatterbox, so even in that fading state, I just kept talking," he joked. "I was talking and talking, and then I just dropped to the floor. The crew was completely shocked and panicked."
Fortunately, a passing medical professional immediately stepped in to help. "There was a group of Asian people shouting in a cafe, so a German doctor who happened to be walking by stopped and rushed over," Jang said. "What I vaguely remember is lying on the floor with people lifting my legs up and looking down at me." He added with a laugh that while the doctor was kindly asking him questions to assess his condition, his English failed him in the moment. "My only responses were 'thank you' or 'no thank you.'"
Coincidentally, another patron sitting in the cafe turned out to be an emergency room nurse at a Spanish hospital. "A German doctor and a Spanish ER nurse teamed up to take care of me," Jang said. "By the time I was starting to stabilize, the ambulance arrived, and they insisted I had to go to the hospital. It took eight hours from admission to being discharged. I thought to myself, 'Is this what real travel is all about?'"
The show also shared a photo captured at the scene, which showed Jang lying on the ground but still sporting a faint grin. "I don't even remember if I was actually smiling," he said, laughing. "But even in a dire situation like that, I guess I just have a naturally cheerful demeanor."
