KATSEYE's Daniela Avanzini has spoken out against accusations about her political beliefs, revealing that she struggled to embrace her Latina identity while growing up in the United States.

The singer responded to an October 26 social media post that featured an older photograph of Daniela wearing a cowboy hat, plaid shirt and jeans alongside a more recent image of the singer.

The poster captioned the picture stating, "Glad HYBE did Daniela a makeover cuz she looked like she voted for trump. She was whitewashed **," the account wrote.

Daniela subsequently addressed the accusation in the comments, explaining that her relationship with her cultural identity had evolved over time.

"Growing up, I struggled to fully embrace my identity as a Latina, especially in high school, where I felt pressure to assimilate to the environment around me," she wrote.

"I've grown into myself since then, but making political assumptions based on old photos and a person you don't know is ignorant. I have never been a Trump supporter."

Her response marked a rare instance of the KATSEYE member directly addressing political assumptions made about her online, while offering a personal explanation for how she expressed her cultural identity during her teenage years.

Born in Atlanta to a Cuban mother and Venezuelan father, Daniela has frequently spoken about her Latin American heritage, including the influence of her upbringing on her musical interests and dancing.

However, her relationship with that identity has previously attracted scrutiny.

Earlier this year, an online debate emerged over whether Daniela had begun emphasizing her Latina heritage more prominently as Latin culture gained visibility within the global entertainment industry.

Some online critics questioned whether Daniela's increasingly visible expressions of her heritage were genuine, while others argued that her background and earlier public statements demonstrated a longstanding connection to her roots.

The discussion also touched on the different experiences of Latinas growing up in the United States, particularly the role that skin color and proximity to mainstream American beauty standards can play in shaping experiences of cultural assimilation.

Daniela had previously discussed her Latin American upbringing in interviews, including the influence of her family on her dancing and her pride in incorporating Spanish into KATSEYE's music. During the group's appearance at Lollapalooza Chile in March, she also introduced herself in Spanish and acknowledged her Latin American background in front of the audience.

Her latest statement adds another dimension to those earlier discussions.

Rather than presenting her relationship with her heritage as something that had always been uncomplicated, Daniela acknowledged that she once felt pressure to fit into the environment around her.

Her comments suggest that the way she presented herself during high school was shaped, at least in part, by the challenges of navigating her identity in an environment where she felt pressure to assimilate.

Ultimately this incident raises a broader question about how public figures, particularly those from multicultural backgrounds, are expected to demonstrate their identities.

For artists whose cultural heritage forms part of their public image, expressions of identity can become subject to scrutiny, with audiences sometimes treating changes in appearance, language or styling as evidence of changing personal beliefs.

Yet cultural identity is not necessarily expressed in the same way throughout someone's life, particularly for individuals who grow up navigating multiple cultural environments.

As KATSEYE continues to build its international presence, the exchange illustrates the scrutiny that can accompany an artist's cultural background, particularly when personal photographs are interpreted through political or cultural assumptions.

By directly addressing the accusation, Daniela has made her position clear: her past appearance should not be treated as evidence of political support, and her experience with cultural assimilation should not be mistaken for a rejection of her Latina identity.
