Four Girl Groups Meet: fromis_9, RESCENE, Baby DONT Cry, Brown Eyed Girls
Four girl groups across very different career stages are heading to one of Korean television's longest-running variety stages this week. JTBC's "Knowing Bros" airs the episode on Nov. 20 at 9 p.m. KST, with appearances from Brown Eyed Girls' Narsha and Jea, fromis_9's Lee Chae-young and Baek Ji-heon, RESCENE's WONI and Minami, and Baby DONT Cry's Lee Hyun and Beny.
RESCENE, one of the newer names on the lineup, walks the cast through the backstory of the "Geoje Yaho" meme that picked up traction online. Minami explains that "yaho" is used in Japan the way people say "hello," then shares how the moment turned into a meme. She also reveals that her mother "was a real gyaru," referring to the Japanese youth fashion subculture, and shows off gyaru poses she learned at home.
WONI uses her time on the show to talk about her hometown of Geoje, a port city on South Korea's southern coast. She calls herself "the first idol from Geoje" and says she was recently named a promotional ambassador for the city. She adds that when she returned home after going viral, "a lot of people recognized me."
fromis_9 leans into the contrast between its two members on set. Lee Chae-young says she has been nicknamed "Mun-jeon-bak-dae-sang," a play on the Korean phrase for being turned away at the door, because her resting expression often reads as cold. She says she tries to smile more in daily life to push back on the impression. Wonyi backs her up, joking that she and Lee go to the same salon and that Lee "was even smiling while getting her hair washed."
Baek Ji-heon, meanwhile, admits she was so nervous about the taping that she took cheongsimhwan, a traditional Korean herbal remedy for anxiety, before arriving. She also tells the cast that meeting host Kang Ho-dong had long been on her bucket list, then shares a high-five with him on set.
Baby DONT Cry, who debuted less than a year ago, plays up the rookie energy. Lee Hyun asks if she can "show everything I prepared today" before launching into a personal talent segment. Beny reveals her real name is Kang Han-bit and talks about a personal connection with Kang Ho-dong.
The veterans bring a different tone. Brown Eyed Girls, who marked their 20th debut anniversary this year, offer the younger groups practical advice on staying together long-term. "Don't get in each other's space too much, and start taking care of your knees, neck and teeth while you're still young," they tell the rookies. They also note that "the leader's role really matters when it's time to renew contracts," pointing to one of the quieter pressure points in K-pop group management.
The full episode airs Saturday at 9 p.m. KST on JTBC.
