fromis_9 emerged from the survival competition series *Idol School* in 2017, debuting the following January with a sound and concept that positioned the nine-member group as one of the more consistent girl groups to come out of the late-2010s Mnet talent pipeline. Their 2018 single "Love Bomb" became the group's signature early calling card, and across the years that followed they built a catalogue ranging from bright, hook-forward pop to more layered, atmospheric fare — capped most recently by their first full-length album *Unlock My World* in 2023 and a second full-length, *From Our 20's*, in 2025.

Debut and Formation

The group's origin is unusual even by K-pop standards. Rather than being assembled in a conventional agency trainee system, fromis_9 was formed entirely through *Idol School*, a 2017 Mnet competition series designed to produce a girl group from scratch through viewer voting. The nine members who cleared the show's final elimination round became the group's founding lineup, and the name fromis_9 — a compound of "from" and "promise," with the number reflecting the member count — was built into that premise. They made their official debut on January 24, 2018.

Their debut single "Glass Shoes," released in 2017 ahead of the formal debut, introduced the group while *Idol School* was still airing, giving the project an early public profile before the group had technically launched.

Music and Discography

The group's early discography moved quickly. Their first mini album *To. Heart* arrived in early 2018, followed within months by the EP *To. Day* and a string of singles including "From.9," "DKDK," and "To Heart." Of these, "Love Bomb" — also from 2018 — proved the most durable, its maximalist pop construction and earworm chorus making it the track most closely associated with the group's name in their formative period.

The 2019 single "Fun Factory" extended the bright, buoyant register of that early run, while the 2020 mini album *My Little Society* showed a degree of sonic maturation, the production drawing on a fuller, more textured palette than the group's earlier releases. "Feel Good (Secret Code)," also from 2020, became a representative work from that phase of their output.

By 2021, with the singles "9 Way Ticket" and "Talk & Talk," the group had developed a more confident mid-tempo pop mode. *Midnight Guest* (2022) is generally regarded as a turning point in their catalogue — a mini album that leaned into a cooler, more nighttime-oriented atmosphere and earned the group substantial attention from listeners who had not followed them from the *Idol School* era. The EP *From Our Memento Box* and single "Stay This Way," both also from 2022, continued that period of concentrated activity.

*Unlock My World* in 2023 marked the group's first full studio album, a structural milestone for any K-pop act and a signal of sustained commercial viability nearly six years after debut. The 2024 single "Supersonic" and the 2025 album *From Our 20's* carried that momentum forward, the latter arriving as the group was also confirmed to be preparing their official Japanese market debut — announced for April 2026 — nearly nine years after formation.

Members

The current active lineup consists of five members: Chaeyoung, Hayoung, Jiheon, Jiwon, and Nagyung. Four members — Gyuri, Jisun, Saerom, and Seoyeon — are no longer part of the group. The transitions reflect the kind of lineup attrition common to K-pop groups with long active windows, particularly those whose contracts and circumstances evolve across the gap between a competition-show origin and a multi-year career.

Activities

Alongside their recorded output, the group has maintained visibility through individual member projects. Chaeyoung, for instance, has appeared in press contexts including a 2026 feature for *Singles* magazine, where she discussed her approach to health and fitness — illustrative of the solo profile-building that long-running K-pop groups typically pursue in parallel with group activity.

The confirmed Japanese debut, set for April 1, 2026, represents a significant expansion of their market footprint and a move that many established K-pop acts undertake once domestic standing is secure. For fromis_9, arriving in Japan nearly a decade after their formation makes it a notably measured entry rather than an early internationalization push.

Legacy

fromis_9 occupy a particular position in the K-pop landscape as a group that survived and outlasted the competition-show mechanism that created them. *Idol School* produced the group and then effectively receded from cultural memory, but fromis_9 continued releasing music, retaining a fanbase, and adding to a discography that by 2025 included two full studio albums and a sustained run of mini albums and singles across seven-plus years. *Midnight Guest* in 2022 is the most frequently cited evidence of the group's creative range, demonstrating that the bubbly pop of the "Love Bomb" era was one mode rather than a ceiling. The group's longevity — and the Japanese debut it enabled — is the clearest measure of where they stand.
