Former NCT member Mark is at the center of a racism controversy after appearing in a shirt featuring the Confederate flag, prompting a formal apology from his agency. Upper Room, the label Mark co-founded, issued a statement on Wednesday addressing the backlash over the wardrobe choice.

"We sincerely apologize to everyone who felt discomfort and disappointment due to the outfit Mark recently wore," the agency said.

The Confederate flag is widely recognized in the United States as a symbol of white supremacy and racism. It originated with the Confederacy, the union of 11 Southern states that broke from the United States in defense of slavery during the Civil War era.

Upper Room said the shirt had been selected as a vintage clothing item. "After recognizing the historical significance and sensitivity of the symbol displayed on the T-shirt, steps were taken to keep it from view," the agency explained. "Nevertheless, the image was shared externally, exposing the symbol and causing public concern."

The statement continued, "Regardless of intent, this matter should have been handled with greater care and thoroughness. Upper Room and the artist do not tolerate racism, hate, discrimination, or any form of intolerance. We fully recognize the seriousness of the concerns raised and deeply reflect on the disappointment this has caused to many people."

The agency also promised changes to its internal process. "We plan to further strengthen our procedures for wardrobe selection and content approval to prevent similar incidents in the future. We sincerely apologize to anyone who was hurt or offended by this matter."

Mark, a Korean Canadian singer, ended his exclusive contract with SM Entertainment in April. At the same time, he departed from every group he was part of, including NCT 127 and NCT DREAM. He then launched his own one-artist label and took on the role of co-CEO.
