Jin Kyung Anchors Netflix's 'Boy in the Back Row' With Quiet Power
Actress Jin Kyung is drawing praise for her role in the Netflix series "Boy in the Back Row," where her quiet, layered performance and a late-story twist have left a strong mark on viewers.
The series premiered on Netflix on the 26th of last month. Jin Kyung plays Jo Hyun-sook, a psychological counselor and the wife of Heo Mun-oh (played by Choi Min-sik), a failed novelist who teaches Korean literature at a university. She carries one of the drama's central threads.
On the surface, Jo Hyun-sook has built a stable household. In reality, her marriage has grown weary. She stays quietly by her husband's side even though he still carries a torch for his first love, absorbing his moods and sharper edges. When Heo Mun-oh begins private lessons with a student named Lee Kang (played by Choi Hyun-wook) and starts to come back to life, she watches with a mix of worry and support.
As the story moves forward, more of Jo Hyun-sook's past comes into view. She tried in-vitro fertilization in hopes of having a child and failed. After that, she and Heo Mun-oh began sleeping in separate rooms, and even conversation slowly disappeared. The loneliness she has carried for years surfaces on screen, and a late twist adds another layer that lingers well after the episode ends.
Jin Kyung draws out the character's inner life with real density. She moves through affection, pity, resentment, and resignation toward her husband in a way that feels believable, pulling viewers deeper into the story. The performance has been called a fresh turn for her.
Her scenes with Choi Hyun-wook, who was born in 2002, have also drawn attention. The two share a bed scene in the series. Jin Kyung, born in 1972, is 30 years older than her co-star, and the pairing adds to the tension of the show.
"Boy in the Back Row" is a suspense drama about Heo Mun-oh, the failed novelist and literature professor, who discovers the genius of Lee Kang, a boy who sits in the back row of his classroom, and grows dangerously fixated on the student's writing. The series is available now on Netflix.
