Super Junior's Choi Siwon Wins U.S. Court Order to Unmask Online Trolls
Super Junior member Choi Siwon has secured a U.S. court order to identify anonymous users behind malicious posts on overseas platforms, according to a Korean media report.
On July 3, a domestic outlet reported that the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California granted Choi's discovery request on July 2 local time. The request targeted 10 users of overseas platforms including X, formerly Twitter, and YouTube. Discovery is a U.S. legal procedure that requires parties to disclose evidence and information relevant to a lawsuit before trial.
According to the report, Choi's side asked X's operator and Google to hand over the names, dates of birth, and addresses of the posters. The information is needed to support a damages suit already underway in South Korea. The U.S. court approved the request.
Choi has reportedly faced a wave of insulting posts and hostile comments aimed at his political views, religion, and appearance. In response, he filed a damages suit in May at the Seoul Central District Court against 10 posters, citing insult and defamation.
Separately, Choi has drawn fresh online attention over a nighttime landscape photo he recently posted and then deleted from social media. Online users speculated that the image was taken near Seoul's Olympic Park, where rallies alleging election fraud have been held. The exact location and his reason for posting the photo have not been confirmed.
