Two of tvN's biggest variety franchises are coming back with very different casting strategies. "Boargeom Magical 2" is keeping its core lineup around Park Bo-gum and adding a longtime friend of his. "Unnie's Farm-to-Table 3" is doing almost the opposite, replacing every member except Yum Jung-ah and rebuilding the cast from scratch.

tvN recently confirmed that actor Ko Kyoung-pyo will join "Boargeom Magical 2." From the original trio of Park Bo-gum, Lee Sang-yi and Kwak Dong-yeon, Park and Lee are staying. Ko takes the seat left open by Kwak. The new season will film through the coming months and air in November.

Kwak's exit comes down to his military service. He is scheduled to enlist as an active-duty soldier on August 25, which made joining the shoot impossible. In an odd twist, he moved to Park Bo-gum's agency after the first season ended, only to miss the follow-up because of the draft.

The original "Boargeom Magical" peaked at a 3.8 percent rating and closed in April at 2.5 percent. Those numbers do not scream breakout hit, but the show earned strong reviews for its warm tone, easy chemistry, and genuine interactions with local residents in each town. The friendship between Park Bo-gum, Lee Sang-yi and Kwak Dong-yeon was widely seen as the heart of the show.

The second season is not straying far from that formula. Ko Kyoung-pyo has known Park for more than a decade, after the two worked together on the dramas "Tomorrow's Cantabile" and "Reply 1988." Rather than plugging in a fresh face with no history, the producers picked someone already close to Park, hoping to protect the loose, comfortable feel viewers responded to in season one.

The reaction online has been positive. Fans posted comments like "the known-good flavor is the best one" and "it's a proven combo, so I'm looking forward to it." Beyond the long friendship between Park and Ko, viewers are also curious about how Ko and Lee Sang-yi will click as a new pairing. The show is keeping most of what worked and shifting only one piece.

"Unnie's Farm-to-Table 3" is going much further. The title does not point to any single cast member, but across all three seasons, Yum Jung-ah is the only person who has stayed. She is the constant that holds the show's identity together, while everyone around her rotates season by season.

Season one, which aired in 2024, drew a peak rating of 5.5 percent thanks to the natural chemistry between Yum Jung-ah, Ahn Eun-jin, Park Jun-myun and Dex. Watching the four gather seasonal ingredients and cook meals together, often looking more like real siblings than co-stars, became the show's signature charm.

Season two, which aired last year, kept Yum and Park Jun-myun and added Lim Ji-yeon and Lee Jae-wook. The new group settled in well, but comments longing for the season one cast never really stopped. A guest episode with Kim Hye-yoon, who shares an agency with Yum and knew her from the drama "SKY Castle," drew unusually strong attention, another sign of how much viewers value pre-existing bonds on this show.

Season three keeps only Yum Jung-ah and brings in Kim Sun-young, Kang Yoo-seok and Roh Yoon-seo as the new siblings. This is not a small tweak. It is essentially a new four-person family built from the ground up. The plan seems to be to let Yum anchor the group while the three newcomers slowly build their own dynamic on camera, turning that process itself into the show's main draw.

Viewers are split. Some feel uneasy about the shake-up, writing things like "the chemistry between the members is the whole point of Farm-to-Table, and this combo feels too unfamiliar" and "the season one cast had the best chemistry." Others welcome the reset, saying "it's a mix we haven't really seen before, so it feels fresh" and "watching a new relationship form could actually be more fun."

For a franchise built on chemistry, changing the cast is a real gamble. Keeping the original members protects the feel of the show but can start to feel repetitive. A big overhaul brings a fresh energy, but it also risks weakening the very relationships that made the show work in the first place.

"Boargeom Magical 2" chose the safer path, plugging in someone Park Bo-gum already trusts and preserving the season one mood. "Unnie's Farm-to-Table 3" went the other way, keeping only Yum Jung-ah and betting that watching new bonds form will be enough. One show is trying to turn quiet acclaim into bigger ratings. The other is trying to keep a hit series alive by remaking it almost entirely. How each choice plays out will say a lot about how tvN wants to run its variety franchises going forward.
