IU Returns to Public Eye at Blue Dragon Series Awards After Breakup, Health Setback

Singer and actress IU returned to the public eye about 10 days after announcing a breakup and a health setback. She appeared at the 5th Blue Dragon Series Awards on July 31 at Paradise City in Incheon, presenting the Best Actor and Best Actress awards alongside actor Ju Ji-hoon.

"I thought I wouldn't be nervous today, but standing here brought back memories of last year, and my heart is pounding," IU said on stage. "The strength I got from the award last year helped me live this past year to the fullest. It's an honor to pass on the precious memories I felt to others."

The appearance drew heightened attention because it was her first official event since going public with a breakup after four years of dating and a follow-up announcement about her health.

IU ended her relationship with actor Lee Jong-suk on July 10. The two had confirmed their relationship in December 2022 and dated openly for about four years before deciding to part ways and remain close colleagues. At the time, both agencies kept their comments brief, saying the matter was a personal one and that they could not confirm anything further.

News about her health followed soon after. On July 20, her agency, EDAM Entertainment, announced that IU's chronic patulous eustachian tube condition had recently worsened. As a result, her concert at Goyang Stadium scheduled for September, along with later performances and the release of her sixth full-length album, would all be postponed.

IU addressed fans directly through a fan communication platform. "I'll focus on treatment and come back as healthy as I can, as soon as I can," she wrote. "I'm sorry that a problem with my ear seems to have ruined the second half of the year we could all have enjoyed together."

Even after back-to-back news of the breakup and the pause in her activities, IU wrapped up her presenting duties with a bright smile. Her calm return gave fans and viewers a welcome update.
