Who Is EVAN Beyond ENHYPEN? His Solo Journey Is Starting to Answer That
When EVAN first stepped forward as a solo artist back in March of this year, there was an obvious question surrounding his return: who would he be outside ENHYPEN? Rather than immediately centering the conversation around his departure from the group, he spent his first months as a soloist focused on establishing EVAN, himself, his music, performances and identity as an individual artist.
Now, as that foundation continues to strengthen with each performance and step he takes, EVAN appears to be entering a different stage of his solo career, one in which he is ready to open up more about his journey to now. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, the singer offered a rare insight into the difficult period he faced surrounding his departure from ENHYPEN, while also revealing how those experiences have gradually found their way into the music and artist he wishes to become.
The shift is particularly evident in the way that EVAN has opened up about his upcoming album, "Death of Me," in which rather than just pointing one specific event as its inspiration, he described the project as the result of a much broader period of self-discovery.
"I was inspired by my own journey," EVAN noted in the LA Times interview. "During this process I realized I didn’t know myself."
In an effort to understand himself better, EVAN said he took the time to travel and find pieces of himself. Those experiences eventually aided the vision for the album which he claimed that he wanted it to be a mirror of who he is on a deeper level.
His search for identity carries an even deeper weight as his departure from ENHYPEN had drawn considerable attention. However, despite all the buzz, EVAN largely avoided the circumstances to dominate the conversation around his return to music but rather he focused on introducing to the world who EVAN is.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, he instead reflected on the period through the lens of what came afterward saying, "I didn't stop thinking about the situation and how I could use the experience to develop myself and grow. That is what got me through that phase."
He also revealed that his experience directly influences his solo debut track "Ride or Die," as he was aware of how concerned fans had become during that period and wanted to communicate with them through his music. "I needed a way to make them feel calm and that's why I released the song," he said.
The revelation within the interview gives EVAN's solo journey and debut track a whole other meaning as he was not just introducing his new sound but also bridging a turbulent period in his career alongside the beginning of something new.
Since then, EVAN's understanding of what it means to operate independently appears to have expanded beyond the music itself as the singer revealed that he takes a hands-on approach to the visual side of his releases, including album covers, working collaboratively with his team to develop ideas that best represent each project.
This further shows that perhaps there had been parts of his previous experiences in a group that stopped him from fully reaching the potential he desired. While it does not place any person above the other, it simply implies that their goals weren’t aligned.
"The attitude that you should have as a solo artist is very clear, you have to take the lead on stage until the very end," EVAN explained, adding that there is an "extra amount of effort" required to ensure everything he prepares is properly expressed.
Taken together, those comments paint a broader picture of EVAN's first chapter as a soloist. Independence has not simply meant performing alone. Rather it has required him to assume greater responsibility for his performances, participate more closely in the visual presentation of his work and, increasingly, turn inward for the experiences that inform his music.
That makes the upcoming release of "Death of Me" particularly significant as his next project appears more interested in introspection and less concerned with introduction. So, while EVAN’s departure from ENHYPEN remains forever a part of his story, it no longer remains the only question surrounding him.
As EVAN begins to speak more openly about that period of time in his own terms, it becomes part of a much larger process for him not just as an artist but maybe as a person as well. It becomes the process of figuring out who exactly EVAN is.
