I-DLE's Miyeon Isn't Just an Idol Anymore: She's a Band Frontwoman

i-dle's Miyeon is using her first Japanese release to test a new lane. On her debut Japanese digital single "RUN AWAY," she shows off not only her voice but her potential as a band frontwoman. The move continues a steady shift she has built through recent solo work, moving one step at a time from "Miyeon of i-dle" toward "Miyeon the solo artist."
"RUN AWAY" leans on J-pop rock band sound and a clear, hooky melody. Miyeon co-wrote the lyrics, which carry a message about jumping toward a new future without hesitation. In the chorus, she sings in Japanese and English: "Let's raise our voices and run into the future / I want to see the shining morning with my own eyes / Higher, wanna be there / I will fly to the moon."
The track is built around rough electric guitar and a bright synth lead. The structure captures the feel of J-pop rock well, but the sound design leaves something to be desired. In band music, the drums need the right kind of presence. Most band records capture a drummer's performance to give the track a sense of space. Here, the beat feels programmed from pre-made samples, one instrument at a time. On the hi-hats and other small details, there is almost none of the human push and pull in timing. Everything sits squarely on the beat, and the drums are pushed so far forward in the mix that they never quite read as a "real" kit.
The standout element is Miyeon's vocal. She has always shown strong technique as the main vocalist of i-dle, but this song lets her sing without holding back to blend into a group.
"RUN AWAY" features a bright, wide-open high range that recalls the vocal of Satoshi Fujihara, frontman of the popular Japanese band Official Hige Dandism. Many female idol vocalists rely on a light, head-voice-driven sound. Miyeon instead uses a belting style anchored in a firm chest voice. Her tone also sits differently from Taeyeon, who is known for her belting. Taeyeon mixes a lot of head voice into her chest voice to keep her high notes bright. Miyeon leans more heavily on chest voice, so even on the same note, her color comes out deeper.
Putting an electric guitar in Miyeon's hands for the music video was a smart choice for widening her range as an artist. It moves her past the standard idol-vocalist image of someone who can sing any genre and shows she has value as a band musician too. It is not just a prop moment. She is focused on the guitar and playing actual chords, which lands. Miyeon has performed plenty of band-style songs as a member of i-dle, but this is the first time she has presented herself as a band frontwoman.
As a solo artist, Miyeon has been careful not to let her image harden into one thing. "Reno (Feat. Colde)" pulled off a decadent, darker look and broke the idea that she was only clean and pure. "Say My Name" showed that her strength is not just power but also fine emotional detail. On "RUN AWAY," she pushes that vocal power to the front while also picking up a guitar. After "Reno (Feat. Colde)" and "Say My Name," she is now pulling band sound into her territory too, quietly expanding the options available to her as a solo artist.
