GRID Entertainment's six-month trainee project "Idol Till I Die" has come to an unexpected end, with the six trainees ultimately falling short of securing their debut.

Launched earlier this year, "Idol Till I Die" followed trainees Cai Jin Xin, Moon Sunbin, Matthew, Oh Junhee, Lukas and Samuel as they worked toward debuting together under GRID Entertainment. From monthly evaluations and intensive training to street performances and self-produced stages, the documentary offered viewers a closer look at the uncertainty surrounding the K-POP trainee system.

From the beginning, however, their debut was never guaranteed. GRID Entertainment CEO Shim Hye-jin told the trainees that their contracts would run for six months, after which the company would determine whether they had reached a level suitable for debut. She also stressed that the company did not want to give them "false hope" if they failed to meet its standards.

After months of evaluations and attempts to prove their potential, the project concluded without the six-member team receiving the green light to debut. According to the final episode, the trainees were judged not to have reached the required level, although some were given the opportunity to continue training rather than being immediately dropped from the company. The outcome also left the members facing individual decisions over whether to remain trainees or pursue different paths.

The decision has since sparked disappointment among viewers who had followed the trainees throughout the project, particularly after watching them publicly struggle through evaluations and uncertainty over their futures. Some fans questioned the decision to document and promote the group so extensively only for the project to conclude without a debut, while others argued that delaying a debut could ultimately be preferable to launching a group before the company believes it can sustain one.

Others have speculated that the trainees' noticeable online attention may not have translated into enough domestic or offline demand to justify a debut. Some have drawn comparisons with GRID Entertainment's existing boy group POW, arguing that international and online interest does not necessarily guarantee a strong domestic fandom. However, GRID Entertainment has not publicly identified a lack of offline demand as the reason behind the decision, making such explanations fan speculation rather than a confirmed factor.

For Cai Jin Xin, Samuel and the remaining trainees, the end of "Idol Till I Die" therefore leaves the question at the heart of the documentary unanswered for now: whether their six months together marked the end of their journey as a team, or simply another stage in the long road towards a debut.
