UNIS Puts a Gen Z Spin on 1997 Hit
K-pop girl group UNIS is reaching back to the late 1990s for its next release. The eight-member act will release a remake single, "Haneulttang Byeolttang," on Sep. 8 at noon KST.
The song was originally released by the female duo B.B in 1997 and has remained familiar to Korean listeners for nearly three decades. UNIS' version retains the original's bright mood and catchy hook while adding a kitschy teen-pop aesthetic and contemporary K-pop production.
The remake pairs the song's nostalgic appeal with the youthful energy of UNIS members Jin Hyeon-ju, Nana, Gehlee Dangca, Kotoko, Bang Yun-ha, Elisia, Oh Yoona and Lim Seowon.
"Haneulttang Byeolttang" marks the first remake released by UNIS since its debut. Having explored both sweet and playful concepts as well as bolder, more assertive ones, the group will now take on a Y2K-inspired style.
The remake also carries a generational contrast. The eight members were born between 2001 and 2011, while the original song came out in 1997. Even the group's oldest member, Jin Hyeon-ju, was born four years after its release. UNIS will therefore reinterpret a hit that predates every member of the group.
UNIS was formed through "Universe Ticket," a girl group audition program co-produced by SBS and F&F Entertainment. The multinational lineup includes members from South Korea, Japan and the Philippines. The group debuted in March 2024 with its first mini album, "WE UNIS."
UNIS signed an initial two-year-and-six-month contract with F&F Entertainment. The agreement allows the group to extend its activities for another two years if both sides agree.
