Actor couple Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin are set to take on back-to-back leading roles this September on rival global streamers. Hyun Bin returns to Disney+ on Sept. 9 with "Made in Korea Season 2," while Son Ye-jin arrives on Netflix on Sept. 18 with "The Scandal."

Hyun Bin reprises his role as Baek Ki-tae, the character he first played in the original "Made in Korea." Season two picks up nine years later, with Baek now serving as acting director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency and the second-highest figure inside the organization. The new season follows his pursuit of even greater power.

His performance in season one earned him the Best Actor award in the television category at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards in May. Viewer response to both the character and his acting was strong. That leaves a clear task for season two. Hyun Bin needs to expand on a role that fans already know well, showing how nine years of ambition and shifting power have reshaped Baek Ki-tae.

If Hyun Bin is deepening a familiar role, Son Ye-jin is going in the opposite direction. "The Scandal" is a series based on the 2003 film "Untold Scandal," a Joseon-era story of a dangerous romantic wager. Son plays Lady Jo, a woman of rare talent who is blocked from using it because of her gender. She proposes a secret bet to Jo Won, Joseon's most notorious womanizer, played by Ji Chang-wook. The character carries both desire and hidden motives.

Son has built her reputation on contemporary dramas and romances such as "A Moment to Remember," "Something in the Rain," and "Crash Landing on You." The question this time is how she handles a character whose composed surface hides sharp ambition and a strategist's mind. It is also her first period drama in about 24 years, since the 2002 film "Painted Fire."

Last year, Son returned to the big screen after seven years with director Park Chan-wook's "No Other Choice." She played a grounded wife and mother holding her family together after her husband loses his job. The role won her Best Actress at the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards and marked a strong comeback. "The Scandal" continues that shift, pushing her further from the melodrama and image-driven roles that once defined her.

Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin have kept building their filmographies since their marriage. This time, they will make their respectives streaming debuts as leads just nine days apart. Hyun Bin sharpens a character audiences already know well, while Son takes on a period drama for the first time in more than two decades. Beyond their status as one of Korea's most talked-about couples, the real interest is what each of them reveal as actors.
