[with ARMY ㉗] "It Brings Me Back to My Childhood": Two Friends Come Full Circle With BTS
BTS's return as a full group meant more than seven members standing on the same stage again. It also brought their fans' timelines back together. Some who started following BTS in school are now young adults, and friends living in different cities traveled long distances to meet at the same venue.
BTS held the Los Angeles stop of their world tour "ARIRANG" at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Sept. 1. It was the group's first show at SoFi Stadium in five years. ARMY, the group's fandom, gathered outside the venue from early in the day, with fans arriving from around the world.
Two friends at the venue had traveled from Orange County and the Bay Area. The drive between the two areas is six to eight hours by car. Both said they had prepared for the show at least three months in advance, and the friend from the Bay Area flew down for the concert.
What waited at the end of that long buildup was BTS together again, all seven members on one stage. One of the friends said she had been a fan since elementary school. She is now 21, and the members she once followed as a child were back as a full group after time spent on solo paths.
"I've liked BTS since elementary school. Now I'm 21," she said. "Seeing all seven together again feels surreal. I can't believe everyone is back, and I love it."
For fans like her, BTS's music is not just a playlist of favorite songs. It works more like a personal timeline, tied to childhood memories and moments of growing up. Waiting for the reunion tour became a way of looking back at their own lives.
Sept. 1 also happened to be Jungkook's birthday. One of the friends wore a black No. 95 jersey with "JUNG KOOK" printed across the back.
"Jungkook is my bias," she said, pointing to the jersey with a laugh. The two had not organized a formal birthday project, but they were holding small gifts handed out by other ARMY at the venue. Fans trading gifts with strangers and celebrating a member's birthday together turned the area outside the stadium into a kind of pre-show festival.
What the two friends were most looking forward to was the night's surprise stage. The song they were hoping for was not a recent hit but an older track tied to the group's earlier years.
"I hope it's one of the old songs. I really want to hear 'Butterfly,'" one of them said. "Since it's Jungkook's birthday, it could also be 'Euphoria.'"
Asked what this long-awaited BTS show meant to them, both friends used the same word: memories.
"I feel so much nostalgia. We've been fans for at least five years," one said. "It feels like we've gone full circle and come back to the starting point." The other added, "It feels like going back to being a kid. I love that I get to reconnect with how I felt back then."
BTS has a way of turning strangers into friends, but the group also strengthens bonds that already exist. For two friends who live their everyday lives in different parts of California, a BTS concert becomes a reason to meet again. The music serves as a shared language even when they are apart.
These "friend ARMY" pairs show why the BTS fandom has grown into something more than a community of shared taste. A concert becomes a place to see the artist, build memories with a friend, and meet an earlier version of yourself all at once.
On stage, BTS returned as seven. In the crowd, fans who have grown up in the years since faced their younger selves. For one night, the distance between Orange County and the Bay Area, and the years between an elementary school student and a 21-year-old, met in the same place, inside the music of BTS.
