Red Velvet's Joy Reveals She Feared Group Would Disband Before Reunion
Red Velvet's Joy opened up about the fear that her group might disband. Ahead of contract renewals two years ago, she said she was "very anxious that the team would end," but decided to prepare a full-group comeback after seeing how firmly her fellow members felt about staying together.
Joy appeared on the Sept. 11 episode of KBS2's music talk show "The Seasons: Sung Si-kyung's Eardrum Boyfriend".
She opened the "Two People" segment with "Hello," the title track of her first solo album, then spoke candidly about the period leading up to Red Velvet's full-group return.
"Two years ago was contract renewal season, and at that time I was very anxious that the team would end," Joy said. She added that she wrote the title track herself to carry a message to fans. "I saw how firmly the members felt, and I wanted to pass that feeling along to our fans."
Joy also spoke openly about her worries about getting older. "At 29, I was anxious that people wouldn't look for me anymore if I wasn't young or pretty," she said. She said her feelings shifted after turning 30. "It feels like I've become one year old again," she said, joking that she is "in my 30s but still a baby."
Joy, who says she loves reading letters from fans, performed an impromptu cover of Lena Park's "Pyeonjihalgeyo." She also shared that she passed her first audition by singing Lena Park's "I Wish It Could Be That Way Now."
Joy then previewed her upcoming work as actress Park Soo-young, including a new drama and an animation dubbing role. She closed the show by performing "Cocktail Love" with host Sung Si Kyung.
