Fall is the perfect time to explore Korea beyond Seoul! From colorful flower displays to seaside food festivals and historic streets, these five events offer a chance to experience the country's local culture, seasonal flavors and autumn scenery.

Busan's Dongnae Eupseong History Festival takes visitors back to the Joseon era, commemorating the 1592 battle against the Japanese invasion. The festival features historical parades, an outdoor musical reenactment and a traditional tug-of-war. Afterward, visitors can unwind at the nearby Oncheonjang hot springs. The festival runs from Oct. 16 to 18 across the Dongnae area.

For a flower-filled escape, the Iksan Chrysanthemum Festival transforms Iksan Central Sports Park into a colorful autumn garden. Visitors can enjoy elaborate flower displays, illuminated sculptures and fireworks, then head to Agape Garden or Hwangdeung Stone Mountain for more scenic spots. The festival takes place from Oct. 23 to Nov. 1.

In Changwon, the Masan Gagopa Chrysanthemum Festival brings together vibrant blooms and coastal views. Visitors can explore flower displays, enjoy nighttime food stalls and watch Haesang Nakhwa Nori, a traditional fireworks display over the water. A stop at Masan Fish Market is also a great way to sample local seafood. The festival runs from Oct. 31 to Nov. 8.

Seafood lovers should add Busan's Mackerel Festival to their plans. Held at Songdo Beach from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, the event serves grilled mackerel and fresh sashimi alongside hands-on fishing activities and a surprise auction. Visitors can also take in ocean views from Songdo Cloud Trail or Songdo Yonggung Suspension Bridge.

Meanwhile, Gamcheon Culture Village's Alley Festival offers a closer look at Busan's colorful art scene. Known for its brightly painted houses and winding hillside streets, the neighborhood hosts stamp tours, busking performances and street food stalls. Visitors can also explore the Little Prince House, featuring media art and stained-glass experiences inspired by the beloved story. The festival runs from October 31 to November 1. Since Gamcheon is a residential neighborhood, visitors are encouraged to keep noise down and respect local residents.

From flower-filled parks to coastal food adventures, these five festivals offer plenty of reasons to explore Korea this fall.
