Nearly two decades after its debut, Girls' Generation has returned to the top of a global K-POP ranking, drawing renewed attention as producer Lee Soo-man's new girl group recalls the veteran group's early years and anticipation builds ahead of its 20th anniversary.

According to the global K-POP analytics index K-POPIT BOARD on Oct. 16, Girls' Generation ranked No. 1 worldwide with a Global Power Score, PWR(GL), of 70.6. The achievement is particularly notable for a group that has not released an album featuring all its members since its seventh studio album, "FOREVER 1," in 2022.

One factor behind the renewed interest appears to be the debut of A2O LITE. The rookie group released its debut single, "NEON," on Oct. 13, marking Lee's return to producing a large-scale girl group for the Korean market after leaving SM Entertainment. With nine members, matching Girls' Generation's original lineup at its 2007 debut, and an emphasis on distinct vocal and dance roles, A2O LITE echoes the girl-group format associated with Lee's earlier productions.

The comparison carries particular weight because Lee has not introduced a large-member girl group in years. A2O LITE's arrival has brought renewed attention to the production style that shaped earlier SM acts, particularly Girls' Generation. Interest in the new group has also created an opportunity to revisit the music and performances that established Girls' Generation as one of K-POP's defining girl groups.

That renewed curiosity is reflected in Girls' Generation's latest figures. Its D-layer metric, which tracks interest beyond the core fandom, surged by more than 999 percent. Although the figures do not establish a direct connection to A2O LITE's debut, they suggest a sharp increase in attention from outside the group's established fanbase.

The rookie group's debut, however, is not the only development bringing Girls' Generation back into the spotlight. The group has also been generating its own momentum ahead of its 20th debut anniversary in 2027. On Oct. 9, Girls' Generation announced its 2027 Season's Greetings and unveiled a group photo featuring all eight members, raising expectations for further group activities.

Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany Young, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, YoonA and Seohyun all participated in the project, marking the group's first Season's Greetings featuring all eight members since 2017. Recent editions had featured only some of the members. With the eight artists pursuing individual careers under different agencies, their reunion in the project held particular significance for fans who have been waiting for more group activities.

The response is consistent with Girls' Generation's strong fandom indicators. Its Fandom Health Index (FHI), which measures fandom activity and engagement, reached 93.5, while its Global Momentum Score, MOM(GL), stood at 72.3. The figures suggest that renewed public curiosity is coinciding with sustained enthusiasm among longtime fans, helping the group remain relevant despite the lack of new group music.

Anticipation for the anniversary had been building even before the Season's Greetings announcement. In a July interview, Tiffany Young said the members were holding quarterly meetings to prepare for their 20th anniversary. Yuri also revealed during a YouTube appearance in September that the members had begun discussing new music and mentioned the possibility of a world tour. Although no specific comeback or tour schedule has been announced, the latest group photo has given fans another reason to look forward to a potential full-group project.

The renewed attention is also evident in South Korea. Girls' Generation ranked No. 3 on K-POPIT BOARD's domestic chart, with a domestic Power Score of 68.3 and a Momentum Score of 73.2. Its Media Attention Score (MAS) reached 78.0, reflecting continued media interest despite the absence of new group music. The domestic results, alongside the global No. 1 ranking, point to the group's ability to remain relevant even without a current comeback.

Girls' Generation debuted in 2007 with "Into the New World" and went on to release hits including "Gee," "Genie," "Oh!" and "The Boys." The group remains a reference point for newer girl groups, particularly those that follow the performance-driven format that Lee helped establish during his years at SM.

The latest K-POPIT BOARD results highlight how Girls' Generation's legacy and current activities continue to sustain public interest. A2O LITE's debut appears to have encouraged fresh comparisons with the veteran group, while preparations for its 20th anniversary have given fans new reasons to pay attention. Rather than being remembered solely as a symbol of an earlier era of K-POP, Girls' Generation continues to attract attention in its own right.
