Yoo Yeon-seok, Seo Hyun-jin Reunite After 10 Years in MBC's 'The Perfect Lie'
Yoo Yeon-seok and Seo Hyun-jin reunite after 10 years in MBC's psychological thriller "The Perfect Lie," and both say trust carried them through the hard scenes.
"It's been 10 years since we last worked together, but instead of feeling awkward, it felt good and comfortable," actor Yoo Yeon-seok said of reuniting with actress Seo Hyun-jin.
The two lead MBC's new drama "The Perfect Lie" (Raieo), which premieres on Oct. 30 at 9:50 p.m. KST. The psychological thriller follows a man and a woman who give different accounts of the same memory. They face off as each tries to bring out the truth. Yoo plays Min Jun-ho, and Seo plays Kang Ji-seon.
It is not their first time on screen together. A decade ago, they appeared in the same series, which reached a peak viewership rating of 27.6%. This time, they meet in a completely different relationship, as two people in conflict.
Yoo said their shared history made the tough parts easier.
"Because we trust each other, we could lean on each other even in scenes that were hard emotionally," he said. "We were also able to draw acting energy from each other while we filmed."
He gave Seo credit for setting the tone. "Thanks to Seo Hyun-jin's focus, I was able to get deep into every scene, too," he said. "It was interesting that we could trust each other's acting and just react to it."
Seo was just as pleased with the reunion. She said watching her co-star during the early stages of filming was like discovering a new side of him.
"Early on, there were moments where I thought, 'He's changed this much,'" she said. "So it was fun watching Yoo Yeon-seok act. And as filming went on, it was nice and comfortable to act while trusting him."
She also talked about the way Yoo works on set.
"I felt that Yoo Yeon-seok is an actor who always delivers his part," she said. "He also comes up with a lot of ideas on set, and that made the scenes fuller."
For Seo, that trust was mutual. "He made me believe that no matter what I did, he would take it and respond well," she said. "I was really grateful for that."
