When "I Am the Best" landed in the summer of 2011, it distilled everything 2NE1 had built over two years into a single, blunt statement. The group's second mini-album lead single was abrasive, confident, and built on a beat that had no interest in being polite — and it became one of the defining K-pop recordings of the early 2010s. Formed under YG Entertainment and debuting on May 6, 2009, 2NE1 spent the better part of six years as one of the most commercially and culturally significant girl groups in the genre's history, earning a global following — known as BlackJacks — and distribution deals with Avex Group in Japan and Capitol Records in North America.

Debut and Formation

2NE1 arrived in the spring of 2009 not through a conventional debut single but through a co-feature. "Lollipop," a collaboration with labelmate Big Bang released ahead of the group's official debut, introduced the four members to a wide domestic audience and became a commercial touchstone before 2NE1 had technically released a single of their own. Their proper debut followed on May 6, 2009, anchored by "Fire" — a track that framed the group's sonic identity immediately: propulsive synth-pop production, multi-member vocal and rap interplay, and an aesthetic several degrees harder than what most contemporary girl groups were offering. The group's output across their active years moved between two poles: aggressive, percussion-driven tracks built around CL's rap presence and the group's collective attitude, and slower, more melodically driven ballads and midtempos that leaned on Bom's vocal weight. "I Don't Care" in 2009 occupied a space between those poles — a breakup song with a pop structure and a hook that moved on domestic charts and helped establish the group beyond the debut. The 2010 full-length *To Anyone* broadened the catalogue further, adding "Can't Nobody," "Clap Your Hands," and "It Hurts" to a body of work that was growing in both scale and stylistic range.

The 2011 second mini-album period produced some of the group's most recognizable material. "I Am the Best" was the sharpest distillation of 2NE1's harder sound — minimal in its arrangement, heavy on percussive impact, and structured entirely around attitude rather than conventional melody. "Lonely" and "Go Away" from the same period showed the group was equally capable of carrying a quieter, more introspective register. The live compilation *Nolza!*, also from 2011, reflected the group's growing capacity as a touring act.

The 2012 single "I Love You" and the 2013 tracks "Falling in Love," "Do You Love Me," and "Missing You" kept the group active through a period that also included substantial touring. Their second full studio album, *Crush*, arrived in 2014, producing "Come Back Home" and "Gotta Be You" and representing the group's most fully realized studio statement. Activities

The years following *Crush* saw the group's collective activity slow considerably. Minzy departed in 2016, and the group formally disbanded later that year. In the years since, members have pursued solo careers and other projects at varying levels of activity. As of 2026, three of the four members — CL, Dara (Sandara Park), and Minzy — remain in public contact, with Sandara Park sharing photographs with CL and Minzy captioned "I♥2NE1." Bom has been absent from group-related appearances, with reported health issues cited as a factor in her reduced activity.

Legacy

2NE1's significance within K-pop rests largely on their early-career positioning: they brought a harder production aesthetic, a more confrontational performance mode, and a multi-role structure — particularly the centrality of a female rapper in CL — to a girl group format that had largely not accommodated those elements. Their catalogue, particularly the 2009–2011 run from "Fire" through "I Am the Best," documented a specific moment in K-pop's commercial and sonic development, and continues to circulate as a reference point for the genre's evolution in the years that followed.
