GOT7's JAY B Finds Growth in Uncertainty With Self-Produced EP 'TR.EE'
GOT7 leader and solo artist JAY B is returning with a new chapter shaped by reflection, growth and a renewed relationship with music.
JAY B held a media listening session for his third EP "TR.EE" on Wednesday at Seongsuyul Music in Seongsu District Seoul, where he shared the creative process behind the album ahead of its release.
The EP marks JAY B's first release under creative label 528Hz and arrives nearly three years and eight months after his previous EP. Inspired by the notion that trees grow stronger roots through constant movement, "TR.EE" reflects on the connections people form and the personal growth that can emerge from moments of uncertainty. JAY B participated in writing and composing every track on the six-song album.
"The phrase really comforted me at a time when I was feeling anxious," JAY B said. "It helped me realize that the emotions I was experiencing weren't simply struggles. They were part of growth."
The singer explained that the album's title and concept stem from a line he encountered while reading. Rather than referring to physical movement, he interpreted the idea of "shaking" as the emotional fluctuations people experience in relationships, whether it is excitement, loneliness or anxiety.
That emotional journey is reflected throughout the album. JAY B said he paid particular attention to the sequencing of the tracks, the texture of the sound and the overall narrative flow so that listeners could experience the project like a novel unfolding chapter by chapter.
The title track "Layback" captures the tension and warmth that emerge as two people grow closer. Dreamy vocal chops, piano melodies and relaxed bass grooves highlight JAY B's signature R&B style. Other tracks include the retro-inspired "Hold onto My Back," the atmospheric "Overflow," lo-fi track "One Call Away," '90s-inspired R&B song "Time" and closing track "We," which ties together the album's central message.
Throughout the listening session, JAY B repeatedly emphasized healing and connection. He noted that 528Hz, which inspired the name of his new label, is often associated with frequencies linked to love and healing.
"I wanted this album to resonate with listeners and provide some comfort," he said. "I hope people can experience different emotions while listening to it."
The singer also revealed that his mindset toward music has changed in recent years. Rather than focusing on proving himself or meeting specific expectations, he has learned to concentrate on expressing what he genuinely wants to create.
"When you expect too much, disappointment can easily turn into self-criticism," he said. "I started music because I enjoyed it. I'm trying to return to that feeling."
While GOT7's music often leans toward pop and trend-driven sounds designed to showcase seven distinct voices, JAY B described his solo identity as rooted in vintage R&B, soul and funk influences. He hopes listeners will continue discovering new details within the album over time.
"My goal as a singer is that people will keep listening to my music even after I'm gone," he said. "Albums contain a part of your soul. I hope these songs remain with people for a long time."
JAY B's third EP will be released at 6 p.m. KST Wednesday on major music streaming platforms.
