Netflix's "The East Palace" Unveils First Stills With Nam Joo-hyuk, Cho Seung-woo
Netflix’s highly anticipated fantasy period drama "The East Palace" has officially released its very first batch of promotional stills, offering international viewers a chilling early look at the cursed, haunted palace lying at the absolute center of its sprawling narrative. The original series stars A-list actors Nam Joo-hyuk, Roh Yoon-seo, and Cho Seung-woo as three pivotal figures inextricably pulled into a dark royal mystery, each carrying their own deep-seated secrets and supernatural abilities.
"The East Palace" follows the gripping journey of Gu-cheon (played by Nam Joo-hyuk), a mysterious man uniquely capable of crossing the thin veil between the world of the living and the volatile spirit realm, and Saeng-gang (played by Roh Yoon-seo), a resilient palace maid burdened with a hidden, complex past. Urgently summoned by the reigning king (played by Cho Seung-woo), the unlikely pair set out on a dangerous mission to uncover the terrifying truth behind a malicious curse currently haunting the crown prince’s private palace. The series beautifully blends a high-concept supernatural premise with the gorgeous, traditional visual language of a classic historical drama, seamlessly moving between the real world and a hauntingly beautiful spirit realm.
The newly released stills heavily lean into a palpable sense of psychological unease beneath the palace's surface beauty. In one striking image, the distressed king tightly holds the young Prince Young-an (played by Jo Dan) in his arms, his facial expression caught in a heartbreaking mix of utter desperation and fear as he looks down at his frail son. In another tense photo, the monarch stands authoritatively over a kneeling, submissive Gu-cheon, projecting a cold, deeply controlled presence. Intrigued viewers note that the king openly denies the very existence of curses or ghosts, raising the central, burning question of why he has summoned a spiritual medium like Gu-cheon to the inner palace in the first place.
Acting under the strict, secretive orders of the king, Gu-cheon begins tracing the roots of the deadly mystery alongside the sharp-witted Saeng-gang. One particularly haunting still captures Gu-cheon slowly walking into a murky pond with a thick rope tightly wrapped around his neck. Another high-energy shot captures Saeng-gang fiercely drawing back a heavy bowstring, ready for combat. In a separate, ethereal image set completely within the spirit world, Gu-cheon takes on a starkly different, powerful air, heavily hinting at his profound personal connection to the dark heart of the case.
A thick red haze and an unfamiliar, alien landscape surrounding Gu-cheon visually represent the spirit realm that sits just parallel to the living world. Meanwhile, Saeng-gang, who possesses the rare ability to hear the lingering voices of ghosts, is shown listening intently to something sinister occurring off-frame, strongly suggesting her crucial analytical role in piecing together the fractured truth inside the royal walls.
Other atmospheric stills showcase unsettling black vines slowly creeping across the king's grand bedchamber, as well as the two leads standing side-by-side at the edge of a misty pond, mentally preparing to cross over into the dangerous spirit world. The rich imagery successfully teases both the massive, terrifying scale of the curse wrapped around the dynasty and the dark political secrets hidden directly underneath it.
"The East Palace" is scheduled to premiere worldwide on July 17, exclusively on Netflix.
