Why SM Entertainment Turned to Lemons Again for Hearts2Hearts
K-POP group Hearts2Hearts is making its summer comeback with its second mini album, "Lemon Tang." But beyond the music itself, one question has drawn attention: Why is SM Entertainment returning to lemons so soon?
Just a month ago, aespa released its second full-length album, LEMONADE, built around the same fruit. The album became another global success for the group, turning lemons into one of the defining motifs of this summer in K-POP.
With Hearts2Hearts now returning with "Lemon Tang," comparisons between the two groups are inevitable. Yet despite sharing the same motif, the messages behind their albums are strikingly different.
Aespa's lemon was bold and intense. Drawing from the phrase, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade," the group presented lemons as symbols of resilience and confidence. The album paired that message with futuristic visuals, electrifying sounds and powerful performances, reinforcing aespa's signature identity.
The concept extended beyond the music. The group introduced the lemon mascot "LEMONI," released a series of viral social media content and even placed lemon-headed figures across Seoul as part of the promotional campaign. Together, these elements turned "LEMONADE" into more than just an album, establishing lemons as one of aespa's most recognizable symbols.
The success of "LEMONADE" naturally raised another question: Could the same fruit tell a different story for another SM girl group?
Hearts2Hearts believes it can. Rather than emphasizing lemons' sharpness, the group focuses on what happens when sourness is shared. During the group's media showcase on Monday, leader Jiwoo explained the concept in simple terms.
"A lemon tastes sour on its own, but it becomes even more delicious when combined with other ingredients. In the same way, we shine brighter when we're together," she said.
She added, "If aespa's 'LEMONADE' expressed the thrilling sourness of a lemon, 'Lemon Tang' captures the freshness and sweetness that shine brighter when we're together."
That idea runs throughout the album. While aespa emphasized intensity and self-confidence, Hearts2Hearts leans into friendship, growth and emotional connection. The group presents lemons not as symbols of challenge, but as symbols of togetherness.
The difference is also reflected in how the two groups approach promotions.
Aespa expanded its world through storytelling and viral campaigns. Hearts2Hearts has focused on fan experiences instead, launching themed pop-up stores and hosting a jjimjilbang(traditional Korean bathhouse)-inspired "Lemon Tang" event featuring lemon foot baths and exclusive merchandise.
The contrast highlights how SM Entertainment is using the same symbol in different ways. Aespa turned lemons into an image of confidence and boldness. Hearts2Hearts is using them to talk about warmth and connection.
Ultimately, the significance of "Lemon Tang" does not lie in whether Hearts2Hearts can repeat aespa's success. The more interesting question is whether the group can make a familiar symbol feel uniquely its own.
